There is no doubt that this book is aimed at students who take the program with a teacher. And to compensate for the great difficulty to integrate the content of the book for a self-taught, one can find a pdf document with the translation of texts on the publisher's website. But the translation is quite suitable, that is to say that one must make the correspondence between the two texts, and we are likely to make mistakes. In the end, we learn the Japanese groping in the dark without tags. All this leads me to think that this book is not suitable for self-taught, and there are some best books to go from a beginner to intermediate level available in French.
My opinion seems very negative but it must still qualify the 2-point: If one has a very good level in Japanese, for example by having to study a book in hand after the first volume, it might be suitable. It offers in addition to the end of quite elaborate book texts not found elsewhere with explanations and translations available on the site.
