Setup and biking - functionality without frills. Comparison of Camelbak, Dakine & Evoc

EVOC Performance backpack CC (equipment)

Customer Review

Looking for a hydration pack for biking, in which you as well as a few other things such as tools, pumps (for dampers & Wheels), spare tube, spare shirt, waterproof jacket, goggles, helmet, mobile phone, keys, etc., as well as 2-3 liters hydration system can accommodate, I looked at 3 different backpacks in the finals and the final decision.

Among them were

Evoc 16cc
Dakine Nomad
Camelbak Mule

All backpacks have the manufacturer in about 16 liters of storage volume, sometimes arrive with some without hydration system, offer several storage compartments, so you can organize his utensils well, all offer a helmet holder, and various ventilation techniques.

Although all backpacks appear very similar on the data sheet, I decided finally to Evoc. Why? A comparison of three backpacks to show.

The color scheme
About taste can indeed argue known. Still, I find the colors of Camelbak and Evoc at most. In particular, the very bright, more neon-looking colors from Camelbak enable one not only back in the 90s, they fall on top of that also a positive effect on. Also Evoc On the positive side with a variety of color schemes here. Dakine sticks there rather in subtle background, although they can also be different.

The quality
All backpacks are processed in lightweight, while also robust material and perfectly. Because there is something to complain about in any. It should be mentioned that the Dakine in terms of material has the edge, as it once again robust effect than the other. This is reflected but also noticeably in weight down.

The size
The Mule was me personally much too small and the Dakine is also much smaller than the Evoc although the Dakine even to have a larger storage capacity. This was first of all the most striking, as it could put both backpacks even loaded in the Evoc. But not that a wrong impression. The EVOC is by no means huge. He is just a few millimeters wide and only a few millimeters higher. But is this enough to swallow the other. The EVOC can also open nice and wide and is designed from the inside in light gray, so you can find everything quickly.
The internal configuration with respect to the color, however, applies also to the Camelbak. Only Dakine backpack designed from the inside both the neon color clips as well in addition to black. But that depends on the model.

The helmet compartment
Both the mule and the Dakine offer helmet compartments made of robust backpack material and are fixed by means of the usual backpack clips. That's basically super, me personally but it would annoy in everyday use, having to constantly loosen the clips to be able to open only to the backpack pockets. When Evoc but you have not a so nice helmet compartment, for a practical solution that works great with or without a helmet.
If you want to fasten the helmet, you can roll the helmet net from the bottom pocket and engage in four places on the backpack. This is a bit tricky because the hooks are advised quite small, but one even when wearing the helmet always have access to the main compartment. Only the access to the large patch compartment must be abandoned. This does not work in the form with the other packs, because you have to open the clip and the helmet can fall out with it.

The storage compartments
All backpacks are similarly well organized and offer lots of storage options for accessories. However, the Dakine has other than the side compartments minimal ahead. It offers in the attached large pocket a little more pockets with zippers as the other backpacks and the quality is perhaps a tick better. There is a waterproof pouch and a nice spacious and padded eyeglass pocket at the top. Suffering offset the side pockets I would criticize, as they are not fitted. Everything you enter grabs here goes, to the detriment of the main subject, since they are directed inward.

The Camelbak bekleckert after my humble opinion also in this category is not necessarily with glory, because everything is organized very simple and mostly with compartments. Side pockets you look at Camelbak vain. Only the rain cover located on the backpack is the positive side.

The EVOC comes here in second place, because it is equipped similarly as the Dakine. Small drawbacks must be done in comparison to the spectacle trade. This is through the wide opening, although well done, but the expensive glasses may thus also fall out quickly. The large patch compartment has no waterproof sheet tray and not quite as many zipper compartments as the Dakine. Nevertheless, there are not only pockets as the Camelbak. In addition, the Evoc example has quite a generous mesh pocket on the top of the main compartment (for z. B. cell phone, keys etc ...) and on the outsides of two stretchable Lycrafächer where you z. Protekoren or in terms of size and 750ml Bottles could accommodate.

Finally in this category was perhaps said that up to 16 liters I find compression straps in this category rather superfluous. But that's my opinion.
The single belt still make sense that the Dakine to z. B. are under backpack still install protectors. For this, you could possibly also use one or two compression straps ...

The carrying system
All backpacks can be put on and comfortable to wear. All have lap belts and through various techniques a ventilated back. Here one can say is difficult, who probably has the edge because the ventilation of many factors depends. Basically, you can sweating under the backpack but not avoid.
Only at the Dakine you through the neoprene-like material on the back already to the touch feel that you could sweat more than average, especially since the center channel for ventilation not very deep fails.
The EVOC is the only backpack a back plate (no protector !!) behind the cushions, which makes it very stable, but not too stiff, so you have a board on their backs. So it remains ajar filled with hydration stand upright.
Both the Evoc and the Dakine have perforated shoulder straps, designed to facilitate ventilation in addition.

A special feature are still removable lap belts when Camelbak Dakine and highlight. When Camelbak possess the tapes Velcro, so you this simply removed. When Dakine, however you can remove the lateral wings including bands completely. These are attached between the back rest and the backpack on both sides with Velcro, which is very stable. So you can choose whether you want to use the lap belt or not at two backpacks. The Evoc not offer this. You can put together the bands but, so you can let them hang unused under the backpack. The length of the straps should be selected only so that they are not around schlackern one meter below.
If you use the lap belts, all serve their purpose.

The hydration system
The Dakine Camelbak and come with hydration system, only the Evoc has none of that on board.
The Camelbak obtained the famous Antidote reservoir, the Dakine a Hydrapak is. Both certainly have to clean their right to exist, but to me they are just not enough in person, so I was already switched to a Widepac of source - no matter what I had decided. Everyone has different preferences here, so I do not want to comment further on that. To credit is the backpacks in any case that they already have everything here in this regard and the Evoc actually loses out.

Still remain the subjects within the backpacks to judge where the bladders are housed.
Here Dakine has found a nice solution, which is also very practical. The reservoir is located in a separate compartment towards the back directed under the strap, which is wide open. Only the strap must be put aside or upwards aside.
Also Camelbak takes a similar approach, however one must put aside the strap. Access to the compartment is yet a disaster, because you can only half open the tray. I do not know what the developers have thought about to leave the zipper top end suddenly on the backpack at the level of the strap. Since one can only shrug his shoulders ...
The EVOC has no separate compartment, so you could weigh him on the less well-equipped side. This is what makes him as well as easy to use. Main compartment, bubble pure, secure it with the Velcro straps - done.
There are on the inside, on the back of the backpack additionally a bag, which extends approximately over 3/4 of the height backpack, wherein the bladder can be stowed. So they can not move anywhere and comes with other objects not in contact in the backpack. A simple but very workable solution.

The drinking tube can optionally embarrassed when Evoc beyond the left or right shoulder strap. An additional plastic retaining clip is desired to install - even on the chest strap. In Dakine of additional retaining clip on the other hand fixed to the left side, the Camelbak right, if you want to take this. Since everyone has to decide how important it is itself.

Conclusion
The cheapest is probably the backpack of Camelbak. However, this brings my view next few advantages a lot of drawbacks, mainly due to size, divider, helmet holder and hydration system, so that it occupies the 3rd place in my personal comparison. On the 2nd place to the Dakine place again. Here, though heavy, but very sturdy design and the many small details are especially noteworthy. For me personally, it has nevertheless not enough to win, because the backpack is a bit too small, the hydration system, despite the opening better dissolved not easy to clean (web in the middle), and the clip of the helmet holder must be opened always, if you at the main compartment want.
That leaves my personal number one Evoc.
He is simple, has few frills and is still small enough, despite its size. And that's what makes it the first choice. One or two zip pockets and a detachable waist belt are missing compared perhaps and the spectacle trade could be a little lower, so that the glasses can not fall the same. That was it but also already with the criticisms, if one disregards the comparison in this predominantly missing raincover.
If you compare the price with the Evoc Dakine, they are almost at the same level, if you equip the Evoc with a 2 or 3 liter Widepac.
The bottom line is the Evoc the Widepac for me the better solution at a reasonable price. Then for those rainy days only one rain covers retrofit, which, however, can be purchased at low prices in accessories.
