This is a Deaver with a new protagonist. Corte works as a bodyguard, for example in the witness protection program, with a super secret, public, American employers. Needless to say that of course he is one of the best and the claim has to make everything super correctly and by the book (or more given knowledge of his mentor).
At least at first ...

What becomes immediately apparent is the first-person perspective in which the action is told. From the first sentence I heard the typical film noir narrator who does the thoughts of the main character known from the off, in the head. Unfortunately, I had this then also the old black and white movies in the mind's eye, what then somehow collided with the current act that just does not play in the 30s.
I could not get used to the whole book about it.

While Deaver normally uses at least two storylines, one example of offenders and even from pursuers view, there is only one. But that falls on his usual tactics, the sudden turns thereby camouflaging that one does not learn when reading the one storyline, what is happening in the other flat.
So the surprise is created only by the fact that is subsequently explained briefly what was withheld from the reader, so the surprise works. I find not so convincing.

The many twists and turns that are so Deaver's trademark is to imagine for experienced Deaver reader often, I think.

After I had just read some Baldaccis and was looking forward to a break from superheroes, Agencies, Offices and Politfilz, I had then also notice - Nope! Does not work with this book. A superhero and secret Organisatonen in Wahsington DC and Virginia.
Gone stupid ...

Who does not know Deaver, should rather start with a Rhyme. Either at the beginning of "The Bone Collector" or my favorite "The broken window".
