Review article:
Sony Xperia J + 32GB SD card, Android version 4.1.2 (ex works)
My previous research related mainly to the requirements:
good quality MP3 player; an above-average battery life; Car navigation (GPS) and a screen size of about 4 ". (Maybe for you, therefore, also the Mobistel Cynus F3 or the new Alcatel One Touch Star interesting.)
My user behavior:
Daily use of Google navigation app or the MP3 player in the car; every now and then an SMS and 1h calls a day; sporadic information and news on the Internet catch up; I do not use social networks. (I'm not a "power user" and this is my first "smart phone". However, I may generally classify regarding IT products as advanced users.)
Feel:
Size just right, because it represents a good compromise between ease of use and practicality (the Xperia J is pocket friendly - no "Breakfast Board").
Especially the back feels "good". Not so slippery and fat finger-prone because "roughened". In the whole noble Seeming. Beautiful design.
5 Stars.
Screen:
Razor-sharp image reproduction in all areas. Super Contrast. Due to the possibility of manual adjustment of brightness setting in the sun easy to read. 4 "screen diagonal with 854x480 pixels enough for me perfectly (even for surfing the net). Touch function responds satisfactorily.
5 Stars.
Ease of use:
"... Only 1GHz single-core and 512MB RAM ??? !!!"
This may cause many go through your mind when you look at the specs for the first time. Correct - the hardware is outdated. Much more important, however, is still the question of what justifies a "Quad Core / 2GB RAM" -Phone? (Will be gambled on the powerful home PC. HD video I look at the plasma in the living room.) Not too hardware-hungry games run smoothly.
I have to (re) daring step and ordered the phone from Amazon and have to say I was not disappointed. All applications used to run satisfactorily smooth. The loading time of applications is fixed. So far I could not notice any stuttering during operation. If everything goes like clockwork. Zooming in the browser or in Google Maps works just fine. Browse the photo and music album skin through fine. The hardware is for me absolutely practicable (the hunt for the best hardware and the highest benchmark results eludes my understanding).
Can be accessed on the running background applications that I close "push out" at times by long press of the home button. Otherwise, the RAM is apparently vollgemüllt, which is not conducive to the performance.
The small on / off button I've also no problems.
4 stars.
Battery life:
The 1750mAh battery lasts about 5 days at my user profile. 3 days when I once very much "play around" (data traffic I binding way, in standby mode, the phone I never turn completely off). The energy storage unit is not permanently installed and can be exchanged. Compared to other smartphones (not only in this price range) I certify the Xperia J a good battery runtime.
4 stars.
Internal storage capacity:
There could be a bit more than the 2GB available for additional apps. But since I no relevant 3D action Revival Firecracker alla GTA - Vice City or similar install, I can get over this. Whole Europe maps for offline navigation I do not belly. All media files are also always shoveled to the SD card. For the necessary standard Apps of space is enough perfectly.
4 stars.
Camera:
For snapshots absolutely fit. "Demanding photography" should be made with another device.
3 stars.
MP3 player:
Very liquid operated; good audio quality; Following car radio (ie sound runs with me rarely internal speakers or headphones).
A European directive (this is unfortunately also true for all "stand alone" mp3 player) is the output power of the device (the audio output; 3.5mm), however, been on an intolerable unacceptable measure limited / cut (no, I'm not hearing impaired). This may however not be held against Sony. There was only the purchase of an external headphone amplifier (FiiO E11 Kilimanjaro), because the relevant software-based "audio booster" -Apps all no good (flutter more volume by shifting the frequency spectrum in the higher range before).
4 stars.
WLAN reception:
Even in places in the house where the wireless signal Experience has shown that only small performance has (upstairs), Wi-Fi reception is possible. I am satisfied with.
4 stars.
Radio:
The reception is unfortunately only moderately. That could mean old "bone" all better. Too bad, here is clearly still room for improvement, especially since I use this function frequently.
2 stars.
GPS:
As AutoNavi (with Google Apps) very suitable. My legacy Garmin Navi is only replacement device. Satellite connection is available in less than a minute. With c: geo geocaching also compatible.
4 stars.
Connectivity:
Following domestic television purpose "PhotoShow" would be interesting for me. I unfortunately can not try.
no star rating.
## Update 1 ## August 2013: The Phone is not generally recognized as a standard USB drive, which can not read "simple device" the data (movies, pictures, music, etc.). On PC Win7 the Xperia is classified under "Devices and Printers" (here you can access the data).
## Update 2 ## August 2013: In the Phone Settings Settings -> Device: Xperia -> Connectivity -> USB connection mode MSC (mass storage mode) can be set. Here, however, can only be accessed on the data from the external SD card, which can be optionally installed as additional memory in the phone. Since, I have such an additional memory card and my files (photos, videos, etc.) Transfer the betimes there is the MSC mode for me is a workable solution.

Price-Performance:
In a former purchase price of approximately 200 Euros - TOP!
5 Stars
Conclusion:
With me so far no frustrating moments. For users who are looking for no Playstation, I speak from a strong buy recommendation.
A total of 4 star.
## ## November 2013 Update 3: Mobile Phone detects the insertion of a plug into the jack no longer. Had the device for repair, since my MP3s Listen my precious little brings about the phone speaker. We'll see what happens.
## Update 4 ## December 2013: After 12 days I get my Xperia from Amazon repair service. According to the leaflet "motherboard" been changed. Everything works again, but the personal data are of course gone, unless a backup was made.
## Update 5 ## January 2014: I can now use as a comparison, the BlackBerry Z10 (service mobile phone). The operating concept of the blackberry is compared to Android, of course, a completely different. Apart from the "operating system", I can not detect any significant difference to Xperia in terms of performance for my user profile.
Until now, only I noticed that the output of the headphone jack of the Z10 is higher (louder) and the touch screen a bit more responsive. My favorite apps running on both devices in approximately the same extent satisfactory. In terms battery life scores clearly the Xperia. It may seem nostalgic, but I also miss the Z10 good old FM radio.
Note: The Z10 currently costs about 350 Euros - the Sony 150, that is still a big thumbs up for the Xperia J!
## 6 Update ## September 2014: In the meantime, the Z10 will cost about 220. Since Android apps can run on the new operating system, the BlackBerry is price-performance standard at least on an equal footing. Since I have become accustomed to the operating concept of blackberry and learned to appreciate it, today I would pick up the Z10. I would like to devalue the Xperia nevertheless not.
