The Songs of Tony Sly: A Tribute (Audio CD)

Customer Review

Successful tribute CD - but still only 3 stars?
Basically, I find the CD very well done and there are many good songs and reputable artists on it. However, I would have said I honestly expected a total of more of it, since the announcements that here exclusively Tony Sly songs (= high-quality cross-genre song writing) are gecovert has triggered a certain expectation to the songs on the CD with me. Maybe my expectations were too high subjective to the CD or perhaps it also too many bands that just do not like them personally.
Overall, I think it's a great thing that is also commercially successful bands such as Bad Religion, Simple Plan or Rise Against took part in the CD, as this certainly attracts a few more buyers and LT a portion of the proceeds. My information Tony Sly's family belongs.

My subjects completely reviewing the songs:
Biggest Lie - Karina DeNike (4 out of 5 stars)
Class interpretation of the song of the lady who is active in the Dance Hall Crashers, or at various Californian punk rock productions had already been operating as backing vocalists. I was a bit confused at first, but now I must say that I find the song really well.

On - Mad Caddies (3 out of 5 stars)
The Mad Caddies could never pick me, although I have used it several times and also tried honestly, as these were a time in my extended circle of friends but long popular. I must confess that I now have the song in the original just not really in the ear. The Mad Caddies version can listen me, but is not Highligt.

Soulmate - Strung Out (4 out of 5 stars)
Strung Out also do not belong to my favorite bands. The version of Soulmate is very successful.

For Fiona - Rise Against (5 out of 5 stars)
The first real highlight on the CD. Tim McIlrath with acoustic guitar, it works normally very good as you can hear here. And if it hurts too: That's better than the original.

Let It Slide - Bad Religion (1 out of 5 stars)
I have been many many years great Bad Religion fan, but this super song of "More Better Ness" BR have really badly interpreted. Sounds to me somehow so as if the still have to be imported quickly that he still on the Write it can - for Bad Religion simply too little.

The Shortest Pier - Nofx (3 out of 5 stars)
Sounds like NOFX, I have to say more? You get what you expect. Who's like, the like it, who does not, the no. ;-)

On The Outside - Snuff (3 out of 5 stars)
Calypso dub reggae punk rock or how shall I describe it. Interesting interpretation is musically very interesting, but the version of John Snodgrass is significantly better.

Homecoming - Bouncing Souls (5 out of 5 stars)
The Bouncing Souls are a band with whom I never got really warm, but the version of Homecoming is really cool and with lots of feeling, somehow close without the replay only cheap the original with electric guitars a little faster.

Feel Good Song Of The Year - Old Man Markley (4 out of 5 stars)
Yeah, hillbilly trash, or as you might call the music? Like definitely me.

Discomfort Inn - Lagwagon (5 out of 5 stars)
For me one of the best songs subjectively on the CD. Is the original of Tony Sly already a very good song and another proof that good songs also work across genres.

Via Munich - Teenage Bottlerocket (4 out of 5 stars)
From Teenage Bottlerocket I have not heard anything in my life. Via Munich is a song in the better average on the CD.

Keira - Frank Turner (1 out of 5 stars)
What I know of Frank Turner I find not bad, but this song I can abgewinnen anything. That does not fit for me easily.

Premedicated Murder - Get Dead (1 out of 5 stars)
That does not fit for me and this is not easy on music style, although I also can not abgewinnen much the.

Devonshire & Crown - Pennywise (4 out of 5 stars)
Sounds stylistically quite typical for Pennywise (the new singer we now forgotten times), but somehow just better. I would like more Tony Sly or No Use For A Name Cover hear from Pennywise.

Straight From The Jacket - Alkaline Trio (3 out of 5 stars)
Is an average number on the CD.

Capo 4th Fret - The Gaslight Anthem (5 out of 5 stars)
Originally a super song and here of The Gaslight Anthem. Feeling.

Already Won - Yellowcard (2 out of 5 stars)
Like me, unfortunately, not very good, the interpretation is not so bad - I can not get anything Yellowcard just that I saw by chance a couple of times live, and who could never convince me, although it's easier for me live than on CD. Sorry, here I'm just too biased.

Not Your Savior - Swingin 'Utters (4 out of 5 stars)
Could the hit on the CD be, when here the Swingin 'Utters would "better" sing a bit (what they can). A little less smoke and whiskey in his voice and that would be the song of the year. Is of course the original already a strong song (how many songs on "More Better Ness") and one of my favorite songs of No Use For A Name.

Fireball - The Flatliners (3 out of 5 stars)
Runs without ups and downs through the CD. Comes to mind while listening actually not peculiar to, so I can not say much about it.

Justified Black Eye - Simple Plan (4 out of 5 stars)
Good interpretation. The song and Simple Plan harmonize well here, but it sounds very strongly of Simple Plan masses Pop Punk Rock - even if it hurts, here there's no sorry from me, for the description fits quite well to Simple Plan.

Frances Stewart - Useless ID (3 out of 5 stars)
A song with no ups and downs without, therefore remain only in mediocrity - even at higher speeds.

On The Outside - Jon Snodgrass & The Dead Pleasants (4 out of 5 stars)
Successful interpretation of On The Outside - with less punk rock.

Dark Corner - American Steel (5 out of 5 stars)
Another hit. Really cool, I find the vocals in the chorus - yeah, Mobvocals. Do I have to call again now as an example that a good song works across genres.

Flying South - Frenzal Rhomb (1 out of 5 stars)
No melody, no Feeling ...

Toaster In The Bathtub - Anti-Flag (4 out of 5 stars)
Very successful interpretation of Anti-Flag. Sounds typical for AF only Tony Sly resonates, ie can not go wrong really.

International You Day - Joey Cape / Scorpios (5 out of 5 stars)
So to play a song of course is always difficult, because here the listener is almost impossibly high demands in advance. Really good version, I was extremely surprised.

What I noticed only really through the album: Here we see that Tony Sly was a very good songwriter, because many songs work very well in different genres and for me that is always a sign of a good song.

Finally:
I am not convinced Tony Sly / No Use For A Name "Fan", although I have every No Use For A Name and albums the band has accompanied me since 1995 repeatedly (more or less) the music, or I but several times over the years have also seen live. This tribute album sounded on paper just too interesting to not to buy it.

I therefore ask the "real fans" for my review for forgiveness because I evaluate only the recorded music and not Tony's life's work, because then I would probably be awarded 5 stars.
