Customer Review

Having previously used the RT-N56U, I am now switched to a defect on the RT-N66U successor. I make wills in brief:

[+] High WLAN and NAT performance since faster processor and 3-stream technology (ie 3 antennas for theoretical max. 450 Mbit)
[+] Now with Broadcom chipset (predecessor had Ralink) and therefore can probably again aufpsielen the possibility of alternative firmware DD-WRT future
[+] Provides Unlike its predecessor RT-N56U wireless guest networks (if, for example times has visit)
[+] 2.4GHz and 5GHz module used and also separated off from each other and simultaneously connectable
[+] Built print server for connecting a USB printer directly to your router
[+] Last official IPv6 support (the predecessor RT-N56U this has not yet)
[+] Chic case design incl. (Optional) stand for setting up the router (and not just flat lie down somewhere)
[+] Antennas are now fitted externally and not internally installed (for better data throughput and optimizing opportunities)
[+] Antennas are not permanently installed, but can be unscrewed and replaced by others (but only for people who know something about antennas)
[+] Beautiful and meaningful, blue glowing LEDs on the chassis to indicate the operating state
[+] Despite the high performance passive cooling with heat sink, that is * not * the noise and wear by active fan
[+] On / Off switch on the device itself. Wow, this is really rare, though it is so simple and can be helpful.

[-] Typical of Asus one bristling with mistakes firmware. Must first Amsthandlung the unit receives a firmware update to be (currently on v3.0.0.96). Hopefully Asus will maintain for the device firmware over a longer period of time on a regular basis.
[-] While IPv6 compatible, but currently the implementation seems to be defective for the upcoming telecom IPv6 deployment mid / late 2012. Since Asus must make improvements in the firmware yet.
[-] Above average power consumption of> 10 Watt. (Normal would be more 4-6 watts). Goes in the long run into the costs. Power consumption is probably due to the fast processor.
[-] The "Parental Control" is not worth the name. Since Asus should still vigorously to tackle setting, otherwise this function is useless.
[-] Confusing translations in the firmware. Instead of "Activate" to read as "Enabled", which enticed in doubt for exactly wrong setting. (The problem is the way also exists in the English language setting.)
(Is assigned so that for example, the NAS always the same IP) Cumbersome manual configuration DHCP assignments - []. The menu should Asus make thoughtful and helpful.
[-] Only very rudimentary adjustment for time-dependent switch on / off the wireless LAN (if you have, for example, children or one night want to automatically turn off the Wi-Fi). Here Asus should allow more accurate adjustment.
[-] Poor help and manual. Although good German and many languages, but says it is hardly one of the functions. If you do not know what a setting means or causes, one must investigate itself. The manual is therefore to understand at best as a starting guide.
[-] Larger and heavier body than its predecessor and now external antennas for unhandlicheres format.
[-] The glowing blue enclosure LEDs can be neither dim nor switch off, so the light can, for example, at night disturb sensitive natures in the bedroom. If necessary, cover the LEDs must then provisionally.

[O] to use the maximum throughput to the other devices in the WLAN must own if necessary to 450 MBit (~ 3 antennas) upgrade
[O] The WANLAN data throughput rate of the router is so high that they will actually never be able to take advantage, as with other high-end models. In this respect, economically assessed people may well resort to a more favorable unit. Speed freaks will of course not care to buy, even if you can not use it. ;)
[O] One can the router (with a little tinkering) in reverse - that is, with the antennas towards the floor - fix; so the cable connections show also down to the floor and you can run the cables nice because they do not have to be plugged into the housing from above. (For the WLAN throughput is the way regardless of whether the omnidirectional antennas show now turned upward to the ceiling or to 180 ° downwards.)
[O] The WPS function is turned on by default. They should turn a precaution because of the recently discovered vulnerability.

Functions as the connection of devices, UMTS modems, etc. to the USB ports I have not tested since I do not currently use the. With me is directly related to the time on the router wired a QNAP NAS.

Overall, a great device of the upper class for home use or small office (SOHO). Marred the impression something incorrect by some firmware and high power consumption. Who is price sensitive, should take up a more favorable router. Otherwise, you can do little wrong with the N66U mE.

PS: If you want to try the router menu times in advance, can search the net times by "Demo N66U UI". Asus offers as a demo on their own server.
