Only problem, the product data presentation highlights the fact that the device can operate independently, battery and microSD card ... but the connection option on the PC via USB port, even if it is mentioned connector is almost ignored, and I'm not the only one here with me to make the remark. To think that in 2014, wired devices have become an obscenity ... So, yes, this scanner can function without a map and without batteries, as long as you reattach to your PC (or Mac, the software is not provided sectarian). And as already mentioned here, the product is delivered without a card, but with batteries (you'll take pretty quickly because the gear is rather greedy).
As for me, I work almost exclusively live on PC. The scanning software is a bit rustic, but once you understand the process, it makes the job quite well, and is doing not bad at all in OCR. Indeed, it is based on the ABBYY engine that is a reference in the field. The art of this tool is to find the starting position of the slider to manage the narrow margins and the bead binders of certain works. The key is to understand that the image acquisition is done only as and when the rotation of the rolling wheels underneath. That may stop working in one place and it is not much considered surface. It is sometimes necessary to turn the knobs fingertip down page of a book a little thick, or drag the scanner on a transparent plastic cover for easy rolling. With a little practice, it grabs the hand. The advantage of the connection on PC is that you can check the result live and repeat as needed. In standalone mode, the tiny LCD screen gives a vague idea that it's laughable. However, this can be used on occasion. But in this case, test your batteries before every use!
