To my D700 I also equal the 50mm / 1.4 AF-D system sold, even though I already the Nikkor 50mm / 1.4 AI-s possessed. The AF-D I liked. The focus is lightning fast and does not depend an AF-S lens behind (at least on the D700). The Bokeh is also very nice. At some point, however it happened - I took the old AI-S out and began to make some pictures with it. The AI-S does not provide automatic focus, on the D700 (and D300, D3, etc.) but it supports A and P mode, in addition to M. Conclusion: As much as I like the AF-D / liked today I use only the AI-s, at least for static objects and portraits. For me, the older AI-s a special "character" - sharpness, micro-contrast, color, bokeh. Nevertheless, I give the AF-D 5 stars because it is an excellent lens, which also is still relatively cheap.
Note: For further aperture the AI-S is prone to "Chromatic aberration", ie magenta or green fringes on high-contrast edges, especially in the corners. In Aperture 2.8, the greater improvement then. The fringing can be personalized with Lightroom or Photoshop (automatically) to remove. Despite these Macke I am very satisfied with the lens.
