In this dystopian novel, Margaret Atwood portrays become a totalitarian society, where women are reduced to the status of servants , forced, moreover, to procreate not to die; they have therefore become slaves.
The style of this book is reminiscent of the totalitarian world of George Orwell's 1984, two different companies in their practices, but similar in their way of life and functioning. Both are scary, they chill the reader on site thanks to the many details and all descriptions that may suggest that these two worlds are real ...
Through the confessions of the narrator Defred, we share his hard life, rather its role in this cruel totalitarian society. Unlike the life she led before she is now deprived of liberty, it has no real identity, family ... it was stripped of all his rights. The touching story depicts it allows us to immerse ourselves in life, to attach to it, and even identify with it.
Throughout the reading of this novel, a certain malaise was present on every page. Besides the fact that it is scary and terribly stuffy, multiple reflections can rise to the surface, especially concerning feminism and women's status in society, but also the freedom of his own person.
So Margaret Atwood has created a unique world with its own codes and rules: a very good idea of the novel, called today futuristic novel.
It is a book incredibly original and very moving, a story that I will not forget anytime soon.
