The first work of the then four-piece band is not to be compared with subsequent albums, but by no means a negative effect on the overall impression. Also the debut "Angels Fall First" offers what is known by most followers albums already: melancholy, dreamy melodies and the enchanting voice of Tarja Turunen. After the first hearing is expected Nightwish- connoisseurs already noticed that the plate impresses rather by silent and thoughtful tones. Real bombastic à la "Oceanborn" in vain, even if the outstanding opener "Elvenpath" suggests otherwise. The same applies to the second title "Beauty And The Beast" in which Tarja delivers a delightful tryst with Sonata singer Tony Kakko Arctica-. Otherwise, there's more to a quiet, although it should be the four-part ballad "Lappi" mentioned in the first place here which can really inspire. The same applies for the wonderful title track "Angels Fall First", which stands as many other titles through a very sad-beautiful text. In "Lappi" you also get to hear some Finnish line in "Tutankhamen" one encounters oriental sounds and "The Carpenter" keyboardist and band leader Tuomas himself gives himself the honor when it comes to singing, but this turns out to be miserably failed attempt at the end; the song is probably generally the weakest on the album, because Tarja seems vocally suspicious often off the mark here. Well, there is no shortage of variety, anyway. You can tell the Finns on "Angels Fall First" clearly indicated that they were still on the road to self-discovery and experimentation here. Many pieces are quite successful, some less mature. The plate is actually really unlike any other album this band , nevertheless it can be said that especially lovers of quieter sounds Nightwish- could find quite pleased with the debut. Although is a not really necessary here for Nightwish typical operatic Metal and also to the energetic arrangements the successor lacks a little, still has the board their very own, fascinating charm. At least a short preview should miss none. Playing tips: "Elvenpath", "Beauty and the Beast", "Angels Fall First", "Lappi"
