At first I thought it was biased blah and a general aversion Canon. Now I know, however, what was meant and I agree largely agree.
My history: I already had the Sony RX100, RX100 II and at the end only a Fuji X-E1. However, due to lack of time I wanted to have a compact, because the X-E1 was no take-along camera and I could not devote as much attention to her, as I wanted. The G7x seemed perfectly with their specifications.
After less than a month with the camera, I can say the following about it:
This is a very good compact camera, that's for sure. But unfortunately it is the above conclusion of TheCameraStore: Nothing but absolutely nothing about this camera is intended to end. Many acts halfheartedly integrated. Examples?
- Why can not I in a compact camera in 2014 the battery does not charge using a cell phone charger cable (3.7V)? On the way so I can not connect a external battery charger when the juice is all, no I have a 85, - Euro expensive, (not currently available) second battery kaufen..im Ernst, Canon ?! (Some people want to tell me, to charge the battery externally is professionally clear.)
- Aprospros professional: Why I must in Manual mode does not put on the lens ring, the focal length ?! This is a matter of the RX100 also since the first model. ISO and exposure time have two functions at any time switched on the ring, but not the focal length. So I have to blindly set (because they will not be displayed) with the zoom wheel, the focal length. Or do I switch to another mode, define where the focal length and then change back to Manual. Ever heard of a Quick-Button, Canon?
- When Sony often the menu navigation has been criticized. But just that I miss in the Canon. There are a total of only two menus and a menu function. The menus are endless lists that are not really categorized and lack some features (example HDR you can not switch as with the Sony in any mode, but there are just as creative mode without manual settings)
- The WiFi feature is a joke: The camera will not turn automatically after transferring the images from. As such a transfer but sometimes can last 20 minutes (many videos) and you forget the camera an extra off the battery, then all morning.
- The flash can not tilt backwards so that you can flash the face to the people only directly frontal ...
- Up to 35 mm the lens recorded so strong that all the buildings look crooked and wrong. In addition, the margins are very blurry.
- In sharp contrasts, the lens has to contend with violent color fringes. Some you can see even without enlarging. (Purple branches against a bright sky at the lens edges)
It may be that Sony has RX100 III less focal length, however, it is more than their entire focal range virtually error-free.
So why opt for kompromissbehaftetere G7x itself?
I can think of three reasons, which speak for G7x and why I will keep it well:
- 100 mm at F / 2.8: at this focal length is already small Leuchtdots of backlights for portraits. The pictures look really great. Since the Sony can still shine so because do not reach their 70 mm.
- The Price: At the moment there are about 200, - Euro between the G7x (~ 500 Euro) and the RX 100 III (~ 700 euro), so that the G7x courting in a different price range to buyers. (9 For 700 euros for one has already a Fuji X-E1 with the 18-55 f / 2.8 -4.0 Kitzoom, which plays in a different league.)
- The touch screen: Touch Auto Focus is a great thing with moving subjects that you do not have only to center and then traced. Simple pressure on the display Paem sharp image.
The Canon is located in the range of 35 85 mm of the image quality is not behind, but at least on par with the Sony. Personally, I liked the colors and the less aggressive sharpness of the Canon much better.
Also you can see the pictures of G7x on straight away that they were made with a good camera. Just about any aberrations can already annoy, or be happy when a beautiful picture is faultless succeeded. The camera is therefore not a crutch, it has only quirks which are not always comprehensible.
Since I usually take pictures from 35 mm to give me the picture performance in wide angle is relatively unimportant. I will cope with the quirks of this camera, even if I am sometimes very angry, because I know that things can be better. Some of these inconsistencies could be corrected even by a software update. In the case from me it will also find an update.
At the end of my conclusion is clearly more positive than it initially suspect could.
For their image quality from 35 mm, the portrait power, the fast lens, pocket capability, the touch screen, the extremely high quality workmanship and the cool clicky lens ring I give the G7x 5 Stars.
However, I need you for the various inconsistencies in the software (allocation for the focal length), the lens error (purple fringing and strong Verzeichung / blur in wide angle) and not in the least comprehensible Battery policy Canons (original battery chip only to load external to the camera) two star pull.
PS: Because Christmas is and I could make already really great, flawless images with the camera, which I am very pleased, I give you back to a star, and land in total in 4 stars! :)
