Trenton John lost his wife Jane (and their first child she was) in a car accident and is trying to overcome his heartbreak in their house in a small village near Salem. But soon, in the middle of the night, Jane appears to her husband and disrupts his life. John gradually realizes that he is not the only one to receive the visit of missing and a powerful evil aura hangs over the village. As to his research, he felt that the terrible secret of these supernatural manifestations hiding in the hold of a mysterious ship that sank some three hundred years earlier ... Masterton contrives in this novel managed to paint this haunted town where the dead come back to "exorcise the living." On a crescendo rhythm and tension, he leads his hero at the heart of an eminently evil universe and leaves the prey to doubts, sufferings and desires. The author once again demonstrates his undeniable talent as a storyteller: the supernatural apparition scenes, too many and intense, literally breathtaking (Jane appearances, of course, especially the scene of the drowning ...) and captivating scenery of the coast of Salem becomes a fantastic character in itself. Despite a somewhat hasty conclusion, the Demon of the Dead is a very good fantasy novel, rich, intelligent and captivating.
