Let's talk about the Stones: Living Legends, since the 60s in the business, the guarantor for countless hits, for decades supplier magnificent albums, monstrous tours, great concerts, from time to time one or the other scandal, etc., etc ...
Well done similar as initially described; Again, drop some factors. The Rolling Stones are celebrating the 50th anniversary of its existence and that needs to be celebrated properly. There for the fans and the loyal following of course immediately to the right product - and the various equal in 5 editions, so that money comes back into the house. I was doing as a fan while willingly, but even I have my very specific expectations: The beginning of the whole dilemma.
What you expect from a product of the 50th anniversary of the Stones? Clear answer: the ne plus ultra. No more. Not less.
In this case, the product is called "Grrr!", Created as a more or less opulent retrospective, depending on the edition. Represented are all big hits and two new tracks "Gloom And Doom" and "One More Shot".
Relatively quickly decided I opted for the rather expensive Super Deluxe Edition, because I wanted to have the whole complete, not any torso. After careful prior research I did know what is inside the box, but I was a bit disappointed when receiving. The design, the equipment and also the contents do not correspond quite to my expectations. My (subjective) comments as follows:
On the plus side:
- Discs:
On 4 sonically excellent, mastered with a lot of tact CDs will be presented "hardest rock band in the world" in chronological order 80 songs long the extensive work of. The first two CDs contain the Sixties hits from the Decca-time, the other two of which are devoted to song-pearl from 1970 to the present. From "Come On" to "One More Shot" can understand and enjoy as the musical development of the most enduring rock bands ever. The new title "Gloom And Doom" is a definite blast, in which Jagger once so letting their hair out. The second new title "One More Shot" is so-so, because I lack something. In this direction there are better Stones songs.
- The bonus disc:
The five unreleased tracks of "IBC demos" from 1963 there are only in this box. Even if you will not listen to that often, they represent is a certain Badge code or documentation value.
- The Tour Postcards:
A nice addition with the motives of old concert posters in high gloss. Could you frame and hang.
- The cover:
The monkey paintings with unmistakable Stones tongue, to the title of "Grrr!". I find original and funny.
On the negative side:
- The Box:
It is to me a thorn in the side. Beautiful appearance, stable design, but with its size of about 33 x 45 cm it is an absolute rarity. Where is such a big thing out? What do you do in Japan, where the apartments are small?
- 7 "Vinyl Single:
Quite unnecessary. The four tracks included from the "BBC Session" could easily fit on the bonus CD with the "IBC demos". The vinyl single as such would be sending you a appreciation in addition to the vinyl edition.
- The Book:
The centerpiece of this entire edition is a fixed and neatly bound, 96-page illustrated book, although it makes a strong impression, in terms of content but nothing is meaningless and totally unnecessary. Information value = 0
In the initial few b / w pages with pictures of Mick Jagger & Co. follows the vast glossy part of the book with photos of stage outfits and other devotional objects of the band. Acts as kind of like a catalog of an auction house in the luxury edition. Plus: the aforementioned b / w pages have an intense, unpleasant smell, not to mention: they stink. I do not like smelly things!
- Storage of Discs:
Each CD stuck unprotected respectively in designated slots on the inside of the book-covers - for me an absolute no-go! Repeated removal of discs inevitably leads to scratches, Abschleiffung and fatigue.
- The Poster:
Is in my opinion not really nice and does not represent any added value.
What would have made the whole thing more interesting:
- The addition of a long-overdue, official clip DVD
- Another CD from the profuse song fundus of the Rolling Stones.
Although the song selection with 80 titles is really quite generous, now say again quite outrageous that it would have been more appealing to go with a fifth CD on lap 100 titles. An additional 20 titles would be playing easily found. I am thinking about on songs like "Sister Morphine", "Dead Flowers", "Sweet Virginia", "All Down The Line", "Shine A Light", "Star Star", "If You Can not Rock Me" "Time Waits For No One", "Hot Stuff", "Memory Motel" "Just My Imagination", "Let Me Go", "Black Limousine", "Worried About You," "Too Much Blood", "One Hit (To The Body) "," Sad, Sad, Sad "," Rock And A Hard Place "," Out Of Tears "," Out Of Control "etc. etc.
- A more interesting design of the book: discographies, cover pictures, track listings, lyrics, official and unofficial figure of pictorial and sound
- A practical presentation: so the box fits in size, at least for the LP's. One can not ever buy for each new Super Deluxe Edition equal a new showcase!
Conclusion:
The expected non plus ultra is this box, unfortunately not. Everyone should think about whether they really need this monster themselves maturely. Even when big Stones fan necessary to consider which edition is the right one.
Speculated short I have with the 3CD edition, but this puts a labbrigen such packaging that you have to have fear when you open the cover, that breaks something. The compact 2CD edition would be an option if you have many things. Although it contains only 40 tracks, but the two new songs are on it anyway. If that is too little, the only remaining choice of Super Deluxe Edition.
The vinyl edition is in this case for me not an issue, since these, as announced with only 50 titles is also not complete. Would this completely, it would be the first choice for me.
Unfortunately, my personal expectations fulfilled none of the editions, so as I said, a dilemma. It's not and it does not go without.
The rating:
It's not easy to find the right vote at such a conflicting product, but I think 3 stars are appropriate in this case.
By the way: Halley's Comet should according to calculations come back to Earth in the year 2061.
