in advance - I am a fan Cavalera, as hardly another are. I have all Sepultura, Soulfly all, all CC albums and Nailbomb album. I know and love Cavalera and yes - I confess - determined this music and imprinted my life.
However, the album confuses me a little. SOULFLY for me was always a journey, an experiment. Something intangible, an unprecedented experience. It was the unpredictable, the fusion of world music, ethno sound, surprising instruments and Soulfly. Cavalera has - it seems to me at least - lost their way here or - deliberately stepped back to brutal Death-Thrash.
Yes - the album was advertised as the most brutal Cavalera work "ever" and yes - that keeps it well. "American Steel", "Treachery", "Legions" ... Double Basses and incredibly hard hammer riffs, paired by a grunt and growl, it a pumping adrenaline into the heart chambers.
Until now I thought that Cavalera transferred his hatred and his anger in the "CC" project and with "Soulfly" still wanted to carry through the world. But "Conquer" and "Omen", it indicated yes to already - here Brettwerk is driven.
As a merciless beating disc this is probably one of the most recommended. Apart from the "Beneath the Remains" or "Chaos AD" I noticed a few gloomy and harder wheels.
If you like but remember the "Primitive" and "Prophecy" albums here will not be happy. Even the much-discussed guest violinist and the little flamenco ensemble tear here no walls.
In short - very good album - SOULFLY in my understanding - rather no. Too straight, too little surprises to unindividual to Death.
