The book, relatively short (300 pages) emphasizes the unusual career of a true miracle of the imperial family after Constantine the Great. Jerphagnon also demonstrates that Julien is not an apostate, since it has always been pagan, whether in secret in his youth and in public once in power.
In a unique style, both erudite and humorous (Jerphagnon speaks of "trainee of glory" or "spoils system"), the book gives us back the destiny of an emperor like no other: it s' proves a very good general having studied the art of war in books; it is also a remarkable philosopher, but he will be abused by a clique of quack.
This is probably the best of French books dedicated to Julian Augustus.
