Thank Me Later clearly had the potential to be a good album, for me it has unfortunately become only a decent debut. Why? Short answer: Too many unspectacular songs. With the first single, "Over", it started promising. The song is catchy and has a cool beat which is not 08/15 and Drake delivers decent verses from. Due to a very comical and lame Chorus just a good, not a very good single. A great chorus could have made this song a real hit. Unfortunately, his quiet songs are not convincing and often dabble in front of him ("Shut It Down", the well 6-minüten song with The-Dream, I had to skip the half). It lacks these songs quite simply to catchy beats and choruses. That there are other, shows that produced by Kanye West "Find Your Love". Granted, the song is strongly reminiscent of Kanye's latest album "808s & Heartbreak", but is one of the few songs that can stand out from the crowd and brings life into the album. TI, Young Jeezy and Jay-Z supply from solid features, in which I have little to complain, but I would have expected of them more energy and their memorable features are unfortunately not. It joins almost everything in a mediocrity. Nicki Minaj is terrible, her verse is probably the low point of the album and also Lil Wayne disappointed me with its feature (I like that "No Love" Lil Wayne's song on Eminem's upcoming album "Recovery", far better).
In summary, it is for me a debut with a few highs and a few lows, but a lot of mediocre songs. Would I buy the album again? Probably not, no. I'd rather download the following songs individually: Fireworks, Over, Show Me A Good Time, Light Up, Find Your Love.
But Drake is still young and I am convinced that his next album may beat his debut. He is just beginning. And I like about him is that he's a pretty down to earth rapper who does not pretend to be a "gangster" or the like and is not afraid to rap / sing about his feelings.
