I had in front of the SLR only experience with a Nikon 1J1. The D5100 is of course a major step forward.
I have previously extra (recommended), the book "Nikon D5100: The book on the camera by Hessler, Benno" bought (reviewed by me). With the knowledge of the book is to make child's play super shots !! I usually use the 55-300er lens and thus make sharp images of animals or playing sports.
Since the camera already is relatively easy (compared to a EOS 650) and also the big lens only 500 gr., Has the use of the set is also very long freehand possible. Have now about 15,000 images shot.
Overall, probably the best buy for a long time.
