Two and a half hours of great Verdi-voices

The great Verdi interpreters (Arte) (Audio CD)

Customer Review

One goes, one goes purely one wants to formulate his 200th birthday in view of the flood of new editions of Verdi CDs. Much has since recycled uncritically. The joint album by Arte and Deutsche Grammophon tries to lift it and presented on two CDs, with a total playing time of just over two and a half hours, a gathering of international stars of Verdi singing.
Each selection is subjective, here are some famous older recordings with the (television) Stars are linked today. The oldest recordings date from the years 1959 (Jussi Björling), 1964 (Joan Sutherland) and 1966 (Carlo Bergonzi and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau). For Verdi fans all offers nothing new, but for beginners this is a commendable mix. Especially as we have learned from Verdi biographer Christoph Schwandt, that so-called legendary Verdi complete recordings are not necessarily recommended with a star because of their lack of ensemble cast. Here you'll find Verdi piecemeal.
Nevertheless, Arte and the German Grammophon have missed an opportunity. Anyone who wants to present the great Verdi interpreters, would chronologically at least should use a few years earlier. These would then have the conductor Lamberto Gardelli, certainly Anna Moffo, Mario Del Monaco and other count. But such a collection is probably fail due to the rights of record companies.
The booklet fails narrow and unloving. Here we would have liked to read to the Verdi interpreters at least brief biographies. Worthy of discussion is the assessment of Björn Woll: The most beautiful and most touching Luciano Pavarotti has responded to the intense demands of Verdi's music with any other Verdi tenor of the past 100 years we have suffered with such as with Big P. Because I would rather with the Music critic Laura Wagner Semrau keep that pointed out that Carlo Bergonzi's distinctive sense of style and his exemplary vocal technique were immensely appreciated by the connoisseurs: Bergonzi possessed literally over the longer breath. Consequently, he was elected Verdi tenor of the century.
A word about Arte: Why this transmitter does not use much more frequently its possibilities to bring closer the viewers the Opera? Now there is already with the private providers Classico competition, you do not even have to be there Reger?
