The author's pen is so fluid and enjoyable to read. We savor every word, it is carried away and the pages turn with such ease that we are at the end of the novel, in tears.
This is not one but two stories that we discover. Hard to say which I preferred, especially since as the title suggests, inevitably, they will end up doing more than one. From that side, I admit that I was not really surprised, I expected this would happen, but it did not bother me.
The story of Ira, although by the tragic circumstances that we do meet, is just beautiful. A life story of love and devotion to his wife that he loves more than anything. A love so deep, so tender and passionate which is envy, and more than once my heart sank for Ira and Ruth, that life, although it was full of love, has not spared.
Ira tells us that life, with his words and that look that the years bring. How he fell in love with Ruth, how he survived the war, how he made his request ... Ira is very bad shape, we understand that this is the end and that, through an imaginary discussion with his wife, it is his life parading before him, and before us at the same time.
The second story is that of Sophia and Luke. We live meet them, seeing their first exchanges, the first chills. While nothing close to the life they lead them quickly, they will realize that they have the same expectations, the same desires.
Of course, they too have their share of concerns, including Luke with his ranch, or Sophia with his job search and a little bit sticky ex boyfriend.
I loved discovering their history and how it led them to meet that of Ira.
Both stories are told alternately, often leaving us on a tragic note at the end of the chapter, with enough tension and suspense to encourage us to continue.
it gives a good pace to the narrative that becomes more exciting.
In short, two beautiful stories served by real and endearing characters, where past and present are intertwined with emotion, a joy to read!
