It is slightly longer than the new power zoom kit lens SEL 1650 and significantly shorter than the high-end lens SEL 24F18 (Zeiss). But it has the same high luminous intensity as the Zeiss lens and, unlike this one electronic image stabilization (OSS). Priced it is half. These 3 advantages: compactness, price and OSS are 3 compelling arguments for me. The picture quality is very high. High sharpness even at wide open aperture at 1.8, which is still increasing slightly when stopping down. It fits particularly for NEX 7 with its extremely high resolution sensor. A great combination! Even toward the edge is not too much sharpness waste. Nice bokeh (background blur), where a high light intensity helps. For good 50mm (equivalent) focal length lens mm film is already well suited portrait while my SEL 24F18 something is "short". Autofocus seated quickly and well. But you can see at wide-open aperture course each defocus at the shallow depth of field at once. In Lowlightsituationen you can to get out here Kitobjektiv when photographing still some with the OSS. And for low-light video is great, because you can keep the "green zone", the shutter speed for a long time, where the kit lens, this is no longer allowed (3.5 to 1.8). The focus ring is running very smoothly (at Zeiss is this perhaps a little smoother).
Perhaps one should not make a short comparison with the Sigma 30mm F 2.8. Here you can get sun visor and Storage Tashkent with the same. This is a bargain priced and very sharp. The two lenses give themselves as each other much. Processing acts but clearly high when SEL. Furthermore, a luminous intensity of 1.8 at SEL to 2.8 at Sigma is already much better. You have to know what you exactly need the fixed focal length in practice stop. Often it also does F 2.8. The filter diameter of 49mm at SEL (and the Zeiss) is more common than the 46mm at Sigma. This has for example also the SEL 55-210mm Zoom or the SEL 50F18. However, at 40.5mm kit lens are quite rare. Since then you have unfortunately buy repeatedly and pay.
The SEL 35F18 is a coat pocket suitable, high-quality supplement to the kit lens NEX 5R / 6/7 for cropping, portraits and for Availabellight Photography (ie at night or indoors) and for movies in lowlight. That the cost is clear. For "Zeiss" it is an affordable, high-quality alternative if you do not necessarily need a slight wide angle. Tested on the NEX 5R and 7. FIG.
