IS THERE ANYONE OUT THERE? OR AM I ALONE WALKING?
The information about the new album came dribs and drabs, band and label have done their homework appear: song snippets, a live version of My God Is The Sun, an entire short film about five songs from the new album, as well as announcements of guest musicians, including surprisingly Nick Olivieri, who is also once been kicked out of the band, belongs. And Sir Elton John. Most of them refine the piece Fairweather Friends, a straightes rock piece, with no frills, and a little gem on the album, which one sounds the joy of the musicians involved at every second. At the same time the song speaks of a constant focus, put the Queens recently to days.
IF Life Is But a Dream THEN WAKE ME UP
1998: After the end of Kyuss Josh Homme published the self-titled debut album of his Queens of the Stone Age. The so-called. 'Stoner rock' white critics and fans to convince the band celebrating a success after another, only with music lovers, with the 2002 album Songs For The Deaf, finally, the big breakthrough. The next two albums are a little more subdued, but still received euphoric. Soon Josh Homme and his men considered as one of the most important bands in rock and roll circus of today. The tape is running like clockwork. But then six years of silence.
DO NOT LOOK JUST KEEP YOUR EYES PEELED
It takes a few attempts before the sparks fly again as a band. Work on the new album takes time, patience, and finally the drummer Joey Castillo, member of the band for ten years. But the Queens toil on until finally with 'Keep your eyes peeled' the fire is kindled final again: a sluggish opener which would in its sparseness also fit well on the previous Era Vulgaris. A leichtfüßigere Bridge loosens the song in the second verse something on, Jack Shears of the Scissor Sisters are at the microphone the honor. One of many guests on the album.
TEARS OF PLEASURE, PAIN THEY TEARS OF TRICKLE DOWN YOUR FACE THE SAME
2007 released their last album Era Vulgaris, a monster of an album, bleak, electronically, but somehow catchy (in the best sense of the word). After an extensive tour, the Queens Of The Stone Age will enjoy a year off: Josh known records an album with Dave Grohl and John Paul Jones under the name of Them Crooked Vultures and hitting the road, Troy Van Leeuwen passes the time with his band Sweet Head, Dean Fertita working with Jack White in The Dead Weather and bassist Michael Shuman founded Mini Mansions. Your main band appliance slightly from the minds, not least, as other priorities are set with the death of fellow keyboardist Natasha Schneider and a near-death experience Josh suddenly.
HEAL THEM WITH FIRE FROM ABOVE THEM HEAL MY GOD IS THE SUN
My God Is The Sun, the first pre-release piece, everything you want from a song of Queens of the Stone Age provides a crisp riff, Interludes and a break, all in less than four minutes into the game. Things are in a nutshell. Some may talk of Pop here already, I personally would rather talk about the proficiency of the group. It is striking that the remaining pieces usually dignified, melancholy turn out and therefore take place in mid-tempo: I Sat By The Ocean testifies in my eyes of Josh's experience with Them Crooked Vultures, an almost cheerful rock song in the style of New Fang; If I Had A Tail also holds back more, and it is one of the most exciting pieces on the album for me and a catchy tune; Smooth Sailing creaks, crunches and once again comes up with falsetto vocals, the song is so funky, blues as may be specified; I Appear Missing, longest song on the album, is in the middle of something, the air, however, get a great guitar solo again the curve; Kalopsia, especially the chorus, unfortunately lose after a few passages the appeal, even if the quiet verses with Josh's song and the reduced Beat prove in the background that the Queens also can use this field.
IT'S ALL IN MOTION, NO STOPPIN 'NOW
The previous QOTSA albums were certainly always work for the listener. Figuratively speaking, can present their music as the noblest hotel in town, with the use of the revolving door but unfortunately, I must now completely spins. Since it takes a few attempts before you have passed this breakneck thing and so will access. And now? With the new album an open door has been installed next to it, through which you can march into the lobby simple: the boy is the same and carries your bags up, it may be as long as a dark horse?
MOST OF WHAT YOU SEE MY DEAR IS WORTH LETTING GO
Of course, the new album is also without a few surprises: first possibly being the presence of the piano and the quiet, thoughtful moments to call, namely in the plays The Vampyre of Time and Memory, and the title song: the former comes up with some sound effects and a guitar solo on that made remember me personally (and I know that it is debatable) that Josh has heard in recent years at least a couple of times Pink Floyd. ... Like Clockwork is completed debut of new drummer Jon Theodore and the first true piano ballad on a Queens of the Stone Age album. The quiet sounds are in no way disturbing or misplaced, but round a coherent body album from wonderful.
YOU THINK THE WORST OF ALL IS FAR BEHIND
What can now draw a conclusion? After all the twists and turns around the creation of the new album, I'm really surprised at how colorful and playful the result then it sounds. In its wealth of variety gets ... Like Clockwork already a special place in the discography of the group. Everything else must probably still show, however.
One thing is certain: Queens of the Stone Age have made a great, contemporary rock album, which combines their major strengths and packs in amazing ways in manageable songs. Thus they attract a quasi balance of 15 years of band history. However, it is my opinion, not their best album, because none of the songs presented to the really big band ran. After six years they will probably win a new generation of fans for themselves, for this is the new album certainly a good introduction to the subject. All others must see if you like the development or not.
I give five stars, because even if it is not their best album, know the men are still the majority of their colleagues to depend. From my side, we can be glad that they do not have to let things get, even if it does not always work smoothly. Like Clockwork.
