as of 2012, singer and GoF mastermind Jon King said goodbye to the Gang of Four was that guitarist and co-writer Andy Gill as the only original member of the pioneering, conformist post-punk troupe for now all alone in there. The future and the survival of the band seemed uncertain and the chances were good that he strikes the skin hat and henceforth only devoted to producing other acts; what he has done in recent decades to satisfy (Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Michael Hutchence, Killing Joke, The Stranglers etc.). It urged somehow the question of whether the grandiose "Content" album in 2011 represents the last major milestone and a worthy finale behind the GoF story continues.

But it did bring me differently than expected. The good Andy made in the "single-handedly" on, picked up with Thomas McNeice (bass) and Jonny Finnegan (Drums) two outstanding live-proven musicians and finally found in John "Gaoler" Sterry also a matching Jon King replacement behind the mic ( although Jon King is not replaceable). John "Gaoler" Sterry's voice sounds just still quite young and unspent; softer and less charismatic than that of Jon King - but that is certainly still expandable.
For the follow-up album "What Happened Next" Gill worked meticulously in the years 2013 and 2014 in his London studio "The Beauchamp Building" new sounds and tortured his guitar to the maximum threshold. In addition, old and new acquaintances were brought on board, who acted as a guest singer / musician:

Gail Ann Dorsey, best known as the bass player in the band of David Bowie and old GoF running mate in album "Mall" is the honor here the song "First World Citizen".
Alison Mosshart sings to the edgy, once-in-ear-setting hooks of "Talk Broken" and "England's In My Bones". Overall, it sounds here but something more tame, as one would expect from her in the Kills or Dead Weather.
Herbert Grönemeyer is a longtime friend and acquaintance of Gill. And certainly also a big fan of Gang Of Four, the above mentioned album "content" has been released on his label Greenland. Now the possibility of cooperation found. Well - why not?
As a guest vocalist on the title "The Dying Rays" he goes there on a quiet and subtle. It is a slow-flowing, oppressive song in which dominates the synthesizer. On CD you will also enjoy the English version - "speck of dust" - on vinyl not! Too bad, because the musical arrangement is a little different here.
Grönemeyer like you or dislike you. I think he's doing pretty well here. He brings his part without being intrusive, and thus provides proof of his musical diversity and openness. Gang of Four & Grönemeyer! Not for everyone, but certainly an interesting combination!
Other guests of the illustrious circle, the Japanese superstar Hotei, the here the title "Dead Souls" pretty groovy guitar riffs joined with brings. Vocally scores of song with a Bowie-esque touch.
Also present Robbie Furze, known as singer and guitarist of the British Electronic Acts The Big Pink. When entitled "Graven Image" it takes over the vocal parts.

In sum is "What Happened Next" a strong, modern and catchy album with the GoF typically intricate rhythms. Despite the many guest vocalists can this keep a good level of uniformity for themselves. Anyone who appreciates Gang of Four and Andy Gill's distinctive, rudimentary nature of his guitar playing like, here comes his money's.
While "content" rather depth and reduction was in the foreground, it is modernity and production technical sophistication here. One can now find better or worse - a matter of taste! Always make only copies and variations of one and the same album brings also nothing. I for one am glad that there are still Gang of Four and hope it will give you a long time!

Conclusion: Compared to my GoF favorite albums "Entertainment" (1979), "Songs Of The Free" (1982) and "content" (2011) - for me all 5 star albums, I would, "What Happened Next "classified at 4 stars. Good approach, Andy, keep it up - you can do it even better!
