I bought this unit as a spare for my already overflowing end Time Machine drive and was quite skeptical because of the many negative reviews that the Windows scored counterpart. But I can soothe any all interested parties: Since the concept of Western Digital, this hard drive "zwangsauszurüsten" with its own backup software and repeatedly mount ends Virtual CD (see the reviews for standard (Windows) version), but has been met with corresponding rejection, WD has now reworked , There are now so by WD for download a new firmware version for the board and a small software tool, by means of which you can see the virtual CD, which will be mounted from the panel disable. Firmware Updater incl. Firmware and tool is available as a Mac downloads. So if you like I want to use your own backup software or the plate for all other purposes, the new firmware version 1.032 and the tool "Virtual CD (VCD) Manager" loads of the WD website (WD Home Page -> Support-- > Downloads -> My Book -> My Book for Mac (+ WD SmartWare) -> WD SmartWare Utilities (VCD & Firmware)), follow the instructions and then the Firmware Feature "SmartWare" on or off.
Thus, also this disk is fully reusable and can also be recommended again. Very quiet, smart shutdown when not in use and automatic power-off when you turn off the computer are the highlights, which WD was able to score in the earlier versions.
By the way: I have transferred to the "Mac OS Disk Utility" my old Time Machine archive on the new disk (Time Machine itself must be disabled while), the new album then registered with Time Machine and voila, my full backup (including history.) now located on the new record. In addition there is also more detailed instructions on the Web (just search for "A Bigger Time Machine without Changing History" googling).
