I put only 3 stars because although the story is compelling and guaranteed suspense until the last page, the conduct of the "investigation" (even if it is not police) is very very confusing. Ruth RENDELL mixture to excess the present, the past, the moods of each one, the fictional works of novelist and jumps without stopping the "cock to the ass" Marie-Caroline Aubert ELLE says of her "she's better than a queen of crime: demanding explorer female psyche." A little too "Explorer" for my taste with much repetition. It would be perfect if it were not so confused. Unable to read only a few pages and not resume playing until several days later without having to go back and get into all of these characters intersect, intertwine, today, yesterday, in fiction? The first 300 pages are thus quite confused. Then we arrive gradually to sort and track the progress of history. The same story could have been handled in a much more fluidly and redacted without taking away the suspense. Including the game of crossed and uncrossed scissors that can be found throughout the reading and is quite repetitive though it has its importance but anyway .... Secondly, it dwells too much on the wife (which we understood was very unhappy, neglected by her husband), on the girls (who are not able to have "normal" relationships after being pampered and adored by their Father) Once we know the worth repeating at book length. Still remains a very interesting scenario and a very well done plot. I still advise patients but readers !!
