It is written like a diary, that of Jack, a young man living in 1937. At first, we discover bitter, lonely and not really friendly. However, it significantly evolves over narration to become an endearing man. We live his least thoughts and emotions. I often had the impression that I was next to Jack in the cold of Articque huddled against the stove and the husky Isaak.
The other characters are less developed but it takes a liking to Gus. Surely because Jack is very attached to him, we have his positive view on the individual. Algie, hateful seems early for these same reasons.
The story is dark and scary. It does not happen much, everything is in psychology. The fantastic is not proved, perhaps is it only in the heads of the characters. Early in the novel, we see the preparations and launch of the expedition, it's not the most interesting moment but once Jack is alone, impossible to stop. I was caught in this story, I was afraid for and with Jack. Many questions remain to the end of the novel, but the lack of response is good because Jack never will either ... it reinforces this impression of reality, as if we had read the diary of a real explorer .
I also want to say a big bravo to the author and his research. Like I said earlier, we really feel it. The scenery, the atmosphere is just perfect for us into the story. In the notes of the late Michelle Paver tells us that she traveled to the far north and it shows.
Briefly, 40 Days of Night is a dark novel, but terribly worrisome taking. This is a one-shot, which is very appreciated as a result would have been superfluous. I am happy not to be missed out on this novel that stands out from other Black Moon and worthwhile that interested.
