A musical journey in Africa

Africa 50 years of music, 50 years of independence: 1960-2010 (18 CD Box Set) (CD)

Customer Review

50 years of independence: this is a great opportunity for us to discover Africa's diversity through music. It is a real musical journey, a trip to the former: 18 CDs to listen (organized according to the cardinal points: North, East, South, West and Lusophone Africa)! You have to take time to let go, to retrace his steps. If we find a lot of famous artists, the discovery is real (for me include: Angola, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Comoros, ...). It is unfortunate that the booklet, very well edited, large enough (76 bilingual pages), although only relatively briefly visited with each artist and each represented country, has no lyrics (but maybe would it have taken a THAT booklet to the words of these 18 CDs ...): we can not know which songs are directly related to independence, and political struggles, though some artists are known for their engagement (they sometimes paid dearly). It's a beautiful box, a nice overview of the music of the African continent, which deserves to be included in any good disco.
