I initially been surprised (and slightly disappointed) by the extraordinary scrutiny of the concert recorded at the Montreal International Jazz Festival July 2, 1990: not a single fact easy and constant internalization even in blues, yet voluntarily supported, like "Big Blues".
But with each new listening something happens: we discover subtleties, a secret groove, beauties actually "intoxicating". These eight relatively long pieces (almost ten minutes each) are all adventurous explorations seeking the ear, well beyond the initial theme.
Definitely, with Charlie Haden, "less is more" (less is more) and when the companion is someone as stellar as Jim Hall, the meeting, though discreet, goes deep.
NB: the sound is really excellent and restores the sounds of both instruments in a magnificent way.
