After using the old Canon 100mm macro, I naturally passed this new 100mm IS f / 2.8 when it was released and must say that I do not regret the investment after a few months of use. Note that I use it on a 7D. First, the building is neat, it is light enough, it was well in hand, manual MAP is convenient to do because of a large ring and the optics are tropicalized (note a seal on the bayonet). This new macro lens has a last generation hybrid stabilizer that compensates for vibration tilt and rotation (which is exceptional!) And thus work more comfortably even in low light. It saves up to 4 speeds (from Canon), which is far from negligible, since macro critters are often in dark places (undergrowth, hedges ...). Personally, I immediately saw the difference from the old 100mm blur since my rate dropped drastically, not only insects but also plants, including in low light without flash (fungi in the forest). It includes a MAP limiter for working in stages: 0,3-0,5m, 0.5 and 0.3-infinity-infinity. AF is very fast and fairly accurate but I must confess that I work almost always manual. Stitched side, it is excellent from f2.8, and f8 and f4 between optimal. A light begins to decay f11 but nothing too bad. In addition, chromatic aberrations are perfectly mastered. Personally, I did not notice any distortion or vignetting in photos; I work usually between f4 and f16, often in the area f5.6, f8, f11. Saturation is almost perfect when shooting with a beautiful color rendering. This is a normal macro lens so it is good macro. However, I also use it for portraits and I must admit that the record is also very good. This lens is versatile enough in the end. It comes with lens hood and protective cover. Note that I would so critical about the visor: it is too big and, because of its length, when not used, it is not possible to return it to secure it along the objective and simultaneously a manual MAP. This is unfortunate because it forces to keep it in a bag (not necessarily practical) or leave the home. In short, if you hesitate to buy it, I hope the few lines above dispel your doubts! This is a great value to me.
