PET SOUNDS (RE-ISSUE) (Vinyl)

Customer Review

The best way to discover Pet Sounds is to listen sitting on the diving board of a swimming pool because you will fall very high! Indeed the reputation of best album of pop music behind it may make you confused at first listen ... Do not hesitate to buy, it is a masterpiece, but do not expect an immediate result, Pet Sounds is a soft drug with very strong addiction, and we listen more dependency arises.

The first famous Paul McCartney was hooked: superb bass lines of "Penny Lane" and "With a little help from my friends" among others come to take source here. And even if "Rubber Soul" Brian Wilson shook and if "Sergeant Pepper" gave him the final blow, Pet Sounds remains stratospherically than any Beatles album (it's a hardcore fan of the Fab Four who speaks).

Unlike the pocket where we see the Beach Boys papouillant goats, Brian Wilson is surrounded by sharks studio to polish his great work (ironic for a beach boy!). For several albums from other members of the Beach Boys no longer officiated as instrumentalists but only as vocalists (luxury). The arrangements here are sublime, but can seem dated at a first listening: no aggressive guitars, some drums rather highly refined percussion whose sacrosanct tambourine very reverberated timpani, harpsichord, the church organ ("That's not me"), harp (intro of "Would not it be nice"), strings or brass and winds against type. As against the bass is omnipresent (bass parts are performed by the talented Carole Kaye, a rare example of female studio shark). Over time, the sound of Pet Sounds remains timeless, while "Sergeant Pepper" keeps connotation "Summer of love" or "Flower Power" very strong.

"Would not it be nice" is the only piece of the album really known in France thanks to a pub for a mineral water Upper Savoy. Its rhythm, its spirit, are a little the tree that hides the forest. Pet Sounds is rather a wry and nostalgic ode to childhood and all the familiar sounds which we remember once grandis.

"God only knows" is for me the most beautiful song ever (at the above composition, though the interpretation of Carl Wilson is equally amazing). The intro horn, some agreements avoiding third hesitating between major and minor causing divine hesitation, these same harmonies which Bach would have had to blush make this the central piece of this green jewel that is Pet Sounds .

But the rest is not soft to the cat: "Caroline No" favorite piece of Brian in the album, sublime falsetto vocals of Brian, melody hung the stars, haunting rhythm as a love story that does not want finish ... Note that the original title was "Carole I Know", but an error of interpretation and printing has gone down in history as such incongruous. "Do not talk" could just listen to music, intimate organ, string arrangements that have certainly influenced "She's leaving home" by the Beatles, but it would be deprived of the divine interpretation of brian (the lyrics are not bad!).

Only marinade what "Sloop John B." detonates a bit and the instrumental "Let's go away for a While" in its classicism would upscale could claim the title of best soundtrack for a James Bond. Everything else is the same barrel. Although the talented Brian here eclipse all, we must recognize that other beach boys here have never sang as well.

Pet Sounds is like a big race in the mountains, some halfway discouragement, there is a lack of oxygen before such majesty, it takes a little drudge to reach the top (you hold fast!), But arrived the view is sublime: it's beautiful! But sad, it must come down ...
