Acer H7550BD 3D Full HD DLP projector (3,000 ANSI lumens, full HD 1920 x 1080 pixels, Bluetooth, Contrast 16,000: 1, Acer Hidden Port Design) White (Electronics)

Customer Review

I got the Acer H7550BD (telephoto lens version) for 1 week for testing in my home theater. Really I tested but only for 2 days, I'll explain why in the course of this review.

In short, the projector is for the price of around 800, although quite well equipped (including 2 3D glasses.), But still unfortunately completely immature.
Especially the firmware is totally flawed and calibration is thus almost impossible.
Professional needs (Tagged Image quality) are, as in Acer usual, only partially served.

Here is a comparison of the positive and negative characteristics of Acer H7550BD:
For details simply by enumerating more!

+ 3D 144Hz definitely possible
+ Absolutely no ghosting in fast motion
+ Power supply in stand-by noise
+ Lamp relatively inexpensive and available as a spare piston purely for around 60
+ Little scattered light front
+ Excellent shading representation
+ No sharpness adjustment in the warm / cold
+ Sluggish lens with minimal image shifts when pressing
+ Almost perfect geometrical image properties (no distortion)
+ Color wheel barely audible
+ Black value for the price range very well
+ Chromatic aberration very well
+ Sharpness of the price range very well
+ Sufficient number of adjustment for home cinema operation
+ Halfway usable image preferences
+ Two adjustable feet
+ 2 HDMI inputs
+ Supplied lens cover
+ HDMI with MHL support
+ Housing very valuable
+ Good protection against fingerprints
+ Protectors must not be removed for testing
+ Beamer compact and relatively easy

+ Lamp easily replaceable
+ Up to 7000 lamp hours possible
+ Hidden Chrome Cast stick
+ 1.3 x zoom

o image flickers when changing the frame rate (wheel-Sync)
o halfway quiet ventilation system (fan speed changes very rarely)
o power consumption average but much lower than that of the Benq W1070 (+)
o color wheel speed only 3 times (therefore more easily recognizable RBE)

- Brilliant Color II wheel (RGBCYW) including white segment.
- Totally erroneous menu
- Too dark for 3D
- Less dynamic (1400: 1) and ANSI contrast (200: 1)
- No dustproof encapsulation of the optical unit
- Low brightness. Measured has the beamer max. 1500 real lumen (1250 lux in the center)!
- 2-year warranty without onsite service (you can hear a lot of negative things about the Acer support)
- Remote control is still without lighting
- No Extreme Eco Mode as with other projectors available
- But extremely high outlet temperature of the cooling air (80Grad +), housing does not suffer (One has to however be observed during installation!)
- The device would be a smaller lens shift do really well because he projected offset by 15% of the image height up

Please note that I can only speak for my tested Beamer here. By series variance in this price range, it may be that you get delivered a better or worse copy with respect to the optical properties!

End of the short review!

-------------------------------------------------- ---------------

Here are the details for all who are looking for more information / impressions about the device:

The packaging is simple, with carrying handle. The projector has sufficiently padded kept (air foil + carrying case) in the outer packaging. The remote control is still without lights and but has a neat appearance. The bag is useful, but the padding of this is not very good. For occasional transport but quite usable. For a home theater projector actually unnecessary, still a nice thing!

The casing is very stable and of higher quality than the Benq W1070 +, although both use the same case basis. The individual housing components run impeccably and without burrs together. The dull, gray-white color, also protects well against fingerprints. In addition, the screen protectors are cut so that they do not need to be removed for testing. The housing can be compressed only slightly.
For me the H7550BD currently offers a good quality on the part of the housing in the price range below 1000. In addition, the housing is very visually appealing and stands out from the
Standard Projector Design positive note.

If the device you look closely, you realize without problems, the similarity with the Benq W1070 +. All fans are installed in the same places in the housing. The adjustable feet and the lens cover are identical. In general, the whole light engine is almost identical. Acer installed in his H7550BD many elements of Benq W1070 + and the ViewSonic PJD7822HDL. . The light engine including color wheel and lamp is 1: 1 identical with that of the ViewSonic PJD7822HDL. The ventilation and enclosure design comes from the base of Benq W1070 +.

Using the same optical engine as the Benq W1070 + and the ViewSonic PJD7822HDL, also the H7550BD is not really sealed. The dust cover is only through "Dust-Sponges" which the optical engine are glued on the two shells (upper shell and lower shell), minimally available. Here is expected to dust over time. Despite this fact, the problem is overstated to the dust. Direct the focus can not deposit more Mote located at the DMD chip is currently used as the mirror is protected by a quartz glass. And this glass is about 2 mm away from the focal point. Therefore, the dust grains must be very large, or there must be very many specks of dust to be present to make this visible on the screen. Basically, a fully enclosed light engine would be nice, but in practice this is obviously too expensive to implement. Incidentally, almost all equipment at the factory already some dust grains on the DMD glass. However, these are only as small white dots visible when illustrates the focal point (focus) on the quartz glass sheet. You can view small amounts of dust in this price range or less as normal.

Back to the unit:
The projector even has the rear ports, which will be favorable for most users and 2 HDMI ports. Furthermore, a component input, one VGA input, a VGA output, an audio-out, audio-in, 2 USB ports and an S-video input and a RS232 interface are available. In general, the connections are very lush. This projector has two adjustable feet. This is sufficient for the orientation at the table or shelf. The lens is pretty stiff and does not wobble. An accidental change is so much more difficult. Even the placement of the lens cover does not or hardly adjusted the focus.

The image quality is preset to classify only as useful. Readjustment is necessary for genuine HC-feeling. The brightness is very low, unfortunately, for a device with white segment in the color wheel. Although for 3000 lumens on paper a lot, you have to remember that these first need to get to the screen. Because it has a Acer H7550BD RGBCYW color wheel, all primary colors and 2 secondary colors (yellow and cyan) and an increased white are displayed. So you can expect a very bright image with a typical color wheel used excess of yellow and blue. But the Acer has unfortunately according to my measurement only maximum of 1500 ANSI lumens, which is exceptionally low for a device with white segment in the color wheel (normal mode, BC on a).
The device achieved by the color wheel only a real 2 to 3-fold color wheel depending on the input signal. The rainbow effect still occurs, however, only rarely and weakly.

It is not possible to provide the whole picture by going perfectly sharp, but it comes a good Objetiv already very close. The lens is completely identical to the Benq W1070 (+) or the ViewSonic PJD7822HDL. Also high it is on the same level (keyword selection). The partially grinded existing problem have in this form but all projectors in this price range and is due to the relatively inexpensive optics. After a short adjustment work but I did it manage to the deviations (CA) on max. To adjust 1/2 pixel. I assume that everyone H7550BD will have this problem varies depending on the series dispersion. 1 pixel offset to the worst point, however, is completely normal and all had I tested devices in the price range below 1000. With only 1/4 or 1/2 pixel can already view the optical deficits as well.

Scattered light forward minimally available. Furthermore, the image edges are sufficient but not perfectly straight (under 1cm deviation of 2 meters).
Chromatic aberration (color fringing, ghosting, max. 1/2 mirror offset to the worst point) is minimally, as already mentioned above exist, but as part and no longer falls on from a distance.
On the whole, the optics are so designate in accordance with the solid and the price class as average. Something better you get near the price not, unless you have an extremely lucky to get "even better" device regarding diversification.

The distance from the screen should be between 230cm and 300cm in Acer H7550BD, so is quite flexible. This refers to the most commonly used screen width of 200cm. The projection rate is between 1.15: 1 - 1:50: 1, depending on the zoom. It is also important that the focus in the operation changed almost imperceptibly.
If you set them in cold projector, the image projector in the warm state is not blurred. Many others I tested Beamer had to be readjusted in the hot state.
The offset is in my device with around 15% of the image height in a standard single-DLP-range value. But that is by the tolerance is not fixed and can vary by a few% points up or down. Here is a small lens shift enriches would really offer.

To adjust the focus there is a test image at Acer H7550BD. Here you can adjust the sharpness well to achieve good sharpness across the entire image. The existing in the test pattern rings facilitate uniform focusing very. 100% perfect but you do not get out the image. The typical DLP color fringes in different forms and colors you always, depending on the series dispersion and quality of the optics. Up to about 1 pixel width you have to accept and does not constitute a complaint of the unit. Otherwise, however, would have the more expensive lenses not have permission. But I must also say that there are quite are also optics in this price range that are almost perfectly. You have to give a lot of luck here!

However, one must also mention that optical errors in Full-HD much easier noticeable than with 720p devices! This is simply due to the smaller mirrors that represent the error stronger. Optical errors, which are generated by the lens are on the mirrors, whether HD or Full HD, always equally strong. Therefore, the error on a smaller mirror as with Full HD are more conspicuous as an HD-ready device, although the quality of the lenses is equal.
Thus it can be said that full HD devices need a better lens so that the subjective image quality is also good. Fringing include always the same, regardless of whether HD Ready or Full HD. It makes but definitely a difference whether a 2mm color fringe adjoins next to a 1mm or 2mm a mirror.

The brightness is Acer with 3000 ANSI lumens, contrast with 16000:. 1 In my opinion, the device is just enough light with maximum of 1500 lumens. In maximum brightness of the projector reaches measured 600 lux that corresponds to around 1,400 white lumens as the unit has a white segment. So do not be blinded by the 3000 lumens, the projectors undercut the factory specification mercilessly! The real dynamic contrast was with my unit with "only" max. 1300: 1 measured. The in-image contrast achieved only worth even 200: 1 (checkerboard). Interestingly, the color Lumen figure is only slightly below the white lumens. I'm guessing here strong problems in the firmware because of Benq W1070 + achieved much better results in terms of brightness and contrast with the same light engine. Here should really be reached much by a good firmware.

In light angedunkelten room the picture is just bright enough and acceptable in very dark conditions. The Eco mode is 2,2m width bearable for me but much darker than the W1070 +. The contrast and the shades are still well presented.

Anyone looking for a really perfect black level, will not be able to find in this price range. However, the black level of the H7550BD is the best thing I've seen in this price range! But because of the low brightness which was to be expected so.
On my screen, the projector achieves a very good black value of 0.33 Lux.
The device has an automatic dimming electronic for the lamp. This regulates between the Eco mode and the normal mode based on image content, the lamp power in several stages. That brings in practice but no significant added value.

The volume of the Acer H7550BD is in my opinion not too loud, in eco mode (which is easily sufficient) very pleasant. Dynamic mode (Dynamic Black in a) is pleasantly quiet and the fan does not change the speed continuously as with many other devices. He adjusts the speed, but goes so slow that people are hardly aware. Very good!
The decibel information (db) provide little information about the actual volume level in the dynamic mode, which is probably the most used. On 100% Lamp power all tested devices are simply useless, unless you have a party. Here is also the H7550BD no exception.

The internal speaker with 2x10W are surprisingly even relatively useful. There are very well reproduced system sounds and normal audio.

The Acer has installed four internal fans, but they are so thoughtfully placed so that they are well ventilated throughout the Beamer (two fans for the lamp and two fans for the electronics / printed circuit boards). The fans generate just one air noise, no hum or high frequency hum. The fans run in Eco mode at about 2500-4500U / m, which depends on the ambient temperature. The projector determines the available speed range of the lamp fan every time. This is done by measuring the ambient temperature when the device starts. If the room is heating up by the projector, the speed is no longer adjusted upward, which can lead to a very high blow-out. Whether this is intentional or a bug of the firmware, I can not say unfortunately. Anyway, you should be aware of this fact (especially in summer).

The outlet temperature is very hot (up to around 80 degrees). While this makes the plastic of the beamer not mind, but you have what is strictly observed during installation.
For me, the projector stand for testing in a metal case and this is so hot that you can not touch the metal on the side of the air outlet openings of the beamer.
The distance from the projector to the metal frame are about 15cm. Here you can see how hot the exhaust air from the projector is. Measured with a pyrometer is this up to 80 degrees.
Is also intended in the shaft which for the Google Chrome stick, it is still relatively hot with 45 degrees. That should make the stick anything, but if this is stable in the long run remains to be seen.

The menu is typical Acer-built and in addition to the pure presentation projectors contains settings for Gamma and Dynamic Black. So actually sufficient for the home theater operation. When the menu ERROR-FREE WOULD !!! Unfortunately, it is impossible to calibrate the projector, since the menu disappears again after a few seconds. One must then again through the entire menu to navigate can change values ... A calibration is not so, because you have to press a button every 2 seconds so that the projector menu remains. So I have to try to calibrate the instrument and see abandoned the attempt failed. Thus, I can not give any information about the achievable color space, etc. ...
There are as you can see, unfortunately, partly massive problems with the firmware of the device. This problem is massive, leading to devaluation.
I have the device therefore being wound down because I did not like the color of the factory and I did not want to spend hours torturing through the menu until the picture fits halfway again after 2 days.

The 3D capability is fine but the image too dark. Both the effect of depth, brightness, and the pop-outs are basically good. Flicker and ghosting there practically not at all. The lack of 3D-RF function I do not miss. When Acer H7550BD the lamp brightness can be adjusted in 3D mode with some other equipment that does not work, unfortunately.
Apart from the much too low brightness, the 3D function is sufficient.

The triple flash 144Hz with only runs with native imagery, which is played at 24 fps. So either Blue-Ray with 1080 24p or via PC with the same settings. The projector then converts the pictures on 2x72Hz, ie 72fps per eye. This is absolutely flicker-free. In Sky 3D goes however not as Sky transmits in 1080i 50Hz. The glasses shutters then only in 100Hz and then you see the flickering light. 50Hz per eye are not flicker. 2D to 3D conversion, the device supports also, but the function is actually no real added value.

The rainbow effect is very different in my opinion. I've been easily susceptible and see the effect very quickly, even though it bothers me only conditionally.
The Acer H7550BD is what the rainbow effect relates to very good (slightly worse than the Benq W1070 +), I see the effect of rare in this unit. The speed of the color wheel is the Acer H7550BD more than 3-fold and in 3D mode a maximum of 6 times. In 3D mode, the color wheel is also much to hear.

One more thing on the subject of motion blur or ghosting:
Some devices fast movements result in contour shadow or be image content for brevity time blurred.
When Acer H7550BD I could see no visible contours-ghosting.

The Acer uses a 210W UHP lamp H7550BD of Osram (P-VIP) and consumes about 270W on average (normal mode). A replacement bulb costs about 150 completely, which is relatively low. The average service life is up to 7,000 hours.

The difference from 720p to 1080p can be seen for me, even though you can not really see the individual pixels even at 720p at 3m distance from the screen at 2m picture width. The 200 more compared to an HD-ready device, it is worth to me, however, even if you will be the biggest difference is not in movies, but probably at presentations notice.

Unfortunately, Acer is only 2 years warranty without onsite service. And what one reads on the support, should the service be better not to take.
I have usually had a good experience with the support professional, but that's a completely different track than the support for home users.

In summary, one can say that the Acer H7550BD is currently only limited use in this price region.

If you can live with the low brightness and the bugs of the FW, the device is indeed useful, but still far away from a good device. The idea with the hidden Chrome stick both good speakers and the two supplied 3D glasses could result in a perfect package, but it is not sufficient for a good evaluation.
A Waiting for a new FW is not recommended because Acer here often takes a little longer and you can even perform any updates. The unit must be necessarily sent for an update.

I would not hesitate to again test with updated FW carry the device around an objective evaluation. Also I would like for all current buyers of the device the ability to perform an update itself. Were not present the above problems, the H7550BD would certainly be a good device, or even the best complete package on the market.

I hope this review helps others something in their purchasing decision.
From my unit gets currently due to the FW-3 problems only price / performance star.

There are many things that Acer in the device could have done better:

- Better warranty conditions
- Remote control with illumination
- Significantly more brightness
- Significantly lower discharge temperature and better cooling solution!
- RGBRGB color wheel
- Block a smaller lens shift
- Functioning FW
- Sealed light engine
