Supergirl (Audio CD)

Customer Review

Faye Dunaway is, not surprisingly, in the film the evil, Helen Slater, from which you have heard to this film similarly often as before, looks pretty and unspoiled, and Peter O'Toole will then urgently needed money - more than you can know the film, in my opinion, but not necessarily one. Well, to save the honor of "Supergirl" one can say that the soundtrack after all comes from none other than Jerry Goldsmith, who must have been so busy in the 80s like no other of his craft then.

Especially at the beginning of the 80s, the composer has created some very memorable symphonic film scores in quick succession - the main title, the Goldsmith wrote about for the first "Star Trek" movie (1979), was afterward recycled for a TV series and has safely not only for self-confessed fans a high recognition value. Goldsmiths score for "Poltergeist" (1981) I think is one of his most mature, the most varied works, "Under Fire" (1983) is just wide of the "Oscar" sidestepped, and "First Blood" (1982) and "The Twilight Zone - The Movie "(1982) also have fixed places on my multistage Goldsmith podium. In the same year in which the Supergirl flying across the screen, Goldsmith wrote then, you still a very nice score for Joe Dante's "Gremlins", and thus are really only of Goldmsith accompanied with music films which are sold now come to mind right away.

"Super Girl" is, in my view, however, one of the weaker productions Goldsmiths - falls in comparison with many other of his scores from this period of "Super Girl" m. E. noticeably, and from the shadow of his great colleague Williams, whose soundtrack for "Superman" is one of the best that Williams ever composed, Goldsmith certainly not stepping out. Where the work of colleague Williams takes with tremendous variety of topics for itself, Goldsmith relies on a limited number of subjects, especially on one of the title character in the body of written march, in which one has superfluously even inserted an electronic hiss, the likely signal the viewer is that here somehow comes to flying.

The rasping sound encounters an over of 77.50 minutes of playing time too often, sophisticated themes, however, unfortunately, are in short supply - the sound of the whole composition and the orchestration are very typical and unmistakable Goldsmith, but the bottom line seems "Supergirl" as a routine, but ultimately rather lackluster unwound, fidgety commission. Even the score for the TV series "Masada" (1981), for example, is very resistant to a varied main theme, but looks in comparison much inspired and sounds far more like very large cinema as "Supergirl".
By the time a in piece 23 the main theme will be cut again to the ears, the whole thing seems just pushy - the "Super Girl" -Marsch is just no second "Raiders (of the Lost Ark) March", and in this score also act Goldsmiths electronic sound gadgets for me so out of place and unnecessary as in barely a second of his scores.

The bottom line is my judgment: "Super Girl" has a main theme, which sounds as if it had Goldsmith pulled from a drawer with no occupied or abgelehntem "Star Trek" material - and beyond, unfortunately, not much more. In other words: I'm really a very big Goldsmith fan, but I'm not sure if I would have been even if I had learned Goldsmith know through his work for "Supergirl".

Expertly outstanding commission, which unfortunately noticeably lacking it on gloss - compared with other Goldsmith compositions from the early '80s acts "Supergirl" uninspired. Probably you can not even blame the Goldsmith, because the film itself is ultimately anything but a milestone in the fantastic cinema. Refer With a running time of almost 80 minutes and a quite informative booklet, the interested notes to 23 pieces on the CD, but the CD made by Silva Screen per se is but one publication, to which there is nothing to complain about - whom the score has actually fallen, will be glad sure about the rational CD edition. I fully recommend to buy the score but only professing completists whose Goldsmith archive should not have any gaps.
