First, during and just after World War II in Germany while it is girl. Elsie is the second daughter of bakers. It sits alongside a Nazi young and sees every day the persecution of Jews intensified.
Then we find Elsie the US in its German bakery she holds with her daughter Jane.
In parallel to this story, that of Reba an American journalist came to interview Elsie and her boyfriend keeps Rikki border between the US and Mexico. I found these passages about Reba and Rikki much less interesting!
The story is well constructed as it keeps the reader's curiosity and suspense of the plot. And it is especially interesting to read a book that recounts this dark period of history for the German side which is pretty rare and I really enjoyed.
