This story of a German regiment in Russia is full of color, movement and tragedy. The author paints a picture of suffering, bravoire blended with the poetry of the beauty of this huge country engulfing the regiment. There gradual loss of the old brave soldiers of 1941, and finally, only a handful survive the end of the war. The doctor, Dr. Heinrich Haape, became the symbol of humanity and courage of the battalion, and finally, as the regiment. Because the author often quotes the book of Haape, I recommend the reader to The War in Eastern read his excellent book (in English) Tramstop Moscow (I do not know the name in French) ... the best book war I have ever read ... mandatory for doctors and infirmières..mais perhaps it is because I was too doctor.
