I loved "things are getting better ..." but I preferred this one. Attention to flashback, allusions, you would lose in the beginning and it is not always easy to remember the names of all the characters. But the tone of Ruby from conception (!), Then a child, a teenager, is terribly assassin or even black sometimes. The feelings of each other are rendered with a rawness or a cruelty without concession.
Kate Atkison reproduced perfectly (I think) what could think about when he was a child, sometimes with words or very bad thoughts toward other children or adults.
The fall is disconcerting but we want to reread passages to find the thread of the plot and see where we got lost.

This sometimes has a small side "Usual Suspects" (film) ...
