Customer Review

The interest of this book lies in the fact that it is written by a historian, who immediately arises as such. It is certain that the approach is scientific, but it was unfortunate that Mr. Petitfils lets talk a little too often his Christian feelings, in my opinion, distort terribly "objectivity" in the matter.
His approach remains very orthodox effect and frankly in line with the Catholic Church not to say "a Catholic correct," in any consideration of the points that annoy, such as whether or not brothers Jesus.
Three passes were particularly made me wince: "Ultimately, the historian can say that actually happened something extraordinary in Cana The rest, of course, is the domain of faith.." (P. 108); "Leaving Golgotha, Joseph goes to town to buy a long cloth (...). The Shroud of Turin -for it is him that agit- is a beautiful herringbone twill ... (p. 414); "A distressing picture, glaring truth, that of a man in pain with a mysterious and fascinating beauty, dignity, serenely, majestically frozen in death!" (p 564).
I think these three examples of well peremptory assertions betray the fact that the historian forgets often to the believer.
This is true of the election of certain sources "reliable" (strictly) or the preference given to the Gospel of John and the rejection of others (why so much hatred for the working Mordillat and Prieur, which seems much more intellectually honest?).
Apart from this unfortunate bias in total contradiction with the statements of the author who claimed in various media to be "a believer, but not a believer historian" (distinction a bit difficult in my opinion), we find here what makes the talent and success of Mr Petitfils: Research based on an impressive documentation and a very fluid style that objectively reading this book a pleasure, even if it is allowed to take his distance from the defended theses.
