Game of Thrones, Volume 1 (Paperback)

Customer Review

I read with passion and greed tomes of Thrones available (4 in English and 12 in French I think). Next, the Dance of the Dragons, due out in spring 2010.

I was amazed and captivated by the story. Reading the first pages 50-100 has been slow, we wonder where we fall, what we are talking, it seems very slow ... and suddenly we realize that we are immersed in history as a great eight, with incredible twists and turns, fascinating characters and a story of uncommon ambition.

All volumes adopt the same principle: chapters 20 to 40 pages each, lingering on a particular person. On the one hand it slows the story (for the last volume, I saw 10 characters in 100 pages, so little progress at that time), on the other hand it allows to dig the characters' psychology , to see that they are rarely all black or all white (except some like Cersei Lannister of the house, and that I love to hate) and to focus on them.

The story in itself: in the 7 kingdoms, Dynasty Targayen (emblematic animal: the dragon) was last down Barthaneon by Robert, who settled on the Iron Throne dominating the 7 kingdoms. His position seems unstable, Robert is more a warrior than a manager. The other houses (the highest knights, holding the largest fiefs) saw some weaknesses and covet this throne. Even internally Robert is disputed, and his beautiful queen, Cersei, dreams only of one thing, get rid of it.

As in role play, all families have their role to play. However two families stand out particularly, the Lannister (Queen Cersei, his brother Jaime I followed passionately from Volume 3, the dwarf brother Tyrion's father) and Stark, which appear as the most home " honorable "with the father, mother Catelyn and fratery (Robb the eldest, Bronn, Rikon, beautiful Sansa, Arya the rebellious and the bastard Jon Snow, seen by many as the hero of this epic). A centerpiece is égalemment Daenerys, the heiress of Targayen and that is becoming increasingly important over the volumes.

The world described is a mediaeval world, ultra-violent, where killings, looting, rape and torture are legion. This does not prevent women from having their say in one way or another, by the charm or the sword. Magic, almost nonexistent at first, gradually made its appearance, but appears as a black and threatening element. The power of dreams, prophecies is very present and determines some actions. Finally, and most importantly, links between homes and their emblems (animals) appear credible and service history (the Stark children each have a werewolf that protects and reflects their personalities, Targayens lived with their dragons ...).

For those who love the fantasy, the Iron Throne of the epic is a must. The beginning is difficult, but after you let go longer taken.
