Genesis (Audio CD)

Customer Review

The self-titled album of Genesis is one that even after 20 years still is sensational (and it will probably be in another 20 years from now). Surely it can not be compared with the previous Genesis albums, particularly those from the early days, which were influenced by avant-garde sound painting. It is therefore conceivable that followers of "Foxtrot", "Nursery Cryme" and similar were disappointed by the 1983 album.
But that does not change the quality of the work.
The album begins with "Mama", an almost seven-minute track, which has no equal. Absolutely no interest, yet a huge chart hit lives the song especially from the powerful, almost aggressive voice of singer Phil Collins drum. The second piece, "That's all" inspired by a true different kind of song that is not but less powerful.
The subsequent "Home by the Sea" and "Second Home by the Sea" (actually only one song with a gigantic solo) let the jaw of the inclined listener respectfully decline towards chest. What the trio Banks / Collins / Rutherford offers here is to beat when it comes to creativity and genius hardly.
The level of the first four songs (the former A-side of the LP) is not quite kept at the former B-side, as with "Taking it all too hard" and "It's gonna get better," two songs are represented, the one little pitiful to Phil Collins tearjerker phase remember. But these nicks are more than out again sharpens the fun "Illegal Alien" and "Just a job to do" and especially the grandiose "Silver Rainbow".
In particular, "Silver Rainbow" stands out - a half-ballad, far from cliché and Schnulzgesäusel, instead full of excitement and atmosphere, supported by the then typical for Phil Collins drum work.
Conclusion: A truly sensational album that must in any collection that rises even halfway exhaustive in terms of rock music, are missing.
