The semi-acoustic disc of the "Boss" is a successful reduction of the waiting time to the next "right" Springsteen album. It's almost become a beautiful tradition that on a rocking work follows an album that returns more to the songwriting roots of Bruce Springsteen. The grandiose "Nebraska" and the very good "The Ghost of Tom Joad" prove that the man from New Jersey may even without his E-Street Band make good music. Of course he is the same with his latest work "Devils & Dust", which is as earthy and dusty, as the name suggests, impressively demonstrated. Of course, "Devils & Dust" is less accessible and a lot bulkier and more thoughtful than the brilliant predecessor "The Rising". Nevertheless, bribe the songs in the current drive by near-perfect songwriting and reduced, tailored to the Master, mostly semi-acoustic arrangements. Sometimes the whole is and closed by the minimalism a little thick (at least at first hearing). The great theme song and the sensational "Long Time Comin '" apologize for some lengthy passages and make more than just a little desire on the next album with the E-Street Band. ****
