All in all I am very satisfied! For a "Compact", the G12 has a superior image quality, an infinite number of settings and is very well made. The optical viewfinder is anything but great, I knew ahead of time and the criticisms this is nothing to add. Another small drawback is the lack of printed manual, but there "online". As a result, therefore, no point deduction and an absolute buy recommendation !!!
Addendum of 18/06/2013:
After about 1 1/2 years and several 1000 trips I cling to my positive evaluation of the G12. And, although I bought a DSLR (Canon EOS 650) me about 3 months ago along with several lenses. The reason was that the "G12" has reawakened my passion for taking pictures again, but in
As time has come to light that the G12 is still limited somewhat by the relatively small sensor and the not so very bright lens. This applies particularly to the lack of "exemption ability / background blur" (eg portraits) that inadequate skills in low light and at slow speed in scenes such as sports and playing children ....
But still remains the "G12" my favorite camera as a "take-along camera". I would never think about the holiday (and now at Pentecost "take my DSLR because that's just not practical (lack of pocket suitability).
And for about 80% of all situations (exceptions see above) is the "G12" for my application needs to be the perfect tool! And besides: From the quality of workmanship and the "feel", the EOS 650 is not the G12 hold a candle .... The former feels just like a "plastic bomber", while the G12 my Wissenes (or of the haptics her) a mainly of metal bestehenedes housing has!
Retrospectively, I find that the decision was not "Komkpaktkamera or DSLR" is, but it is best both anschafft be the same!
