The first fifty pages are delicious but the following are not up to par. Humor scathing early leaves room for a more serious, even boring. The novel takes the appearance of a political treaty while the mischievous character of Hilarion gives way to geo-political considerations. It remains the best pen of the author of the Abyssinian we enjoy meeting.
