Jean Martinon: Deutsche Grammophon Legacy (CD)

Customer Review

After driving for five years the forces of Chicago (see his recordings for RCA), Jean Martinon was called to the head of the Orchestre National de ORTF (future National Orchestra of France) to take over from Charles Munch ( recall that the latter was overthrown in 1968 by a heart attack while on tour in the US). Anecdotally, it is noted that, at the same time, to take over from Munch to head the new Orchestre de Paris (born in 1967 on the ashes of the League of Conservatory Concerts), we used a wand destined to take a few months later reindeer Chicago Georg Solti!

If before his American period Martinon recorded for Decca (see box published in 2006) or Philips (recordings of previously unreleased on CD, published in another publication in Eloquence 3CD), he was already making his first recordings in 1960 for Deutsche Grammophon, resuming afterwards its collaboration with the German company after his RCA contract (a non-exclusive collaboration too, since Martinon also conduct numerous recordings for EMI, Erato or Vox).

The Deutsche Grammophon recordings of Martinon, made in Paris between 1960 and 1971 are included in this box Eloquence, a series that definitely deserves its name. An emblematic repertoire (including irresistible Bizet), concertante pieces directory with prestigious soloists at the top (Pierre Fournier, and Nicanor Zabaleta, for their collaboration single disc with the French leader), but also rare pieces (the Lalo ballet suites Tailleferre Concerto; or that of Ginastera, previously unreleased on CD).

As a bonus luxury, Martinon tribute to composer (and himself an excellent violinist), we find the rare recording studio of the 2nd Violin Concerto, composed by French chef for radiant bow of Henryk Szeryng, who secured the inception in 1961. A recording made in studio in Munich with the dedicatee on violin, and the Symphony Orchestra of the Bavarian Radio under the baton of Rafael Kubelik excellent, which defends science and enthusiasm Martinon a composer of the twentieth century (a recording originally coupled with the Berg Concerto, and published so far to my knowledge only in the case Kubelik "Original Masters"). It will be recalled in passing, for the nod, if Martinon succeeded Fritz Reiner at the head of Chicago, it was Rafael Kubelik who preceded him for three seasons, suffering like Martinon acerbic criticism of some media (just Return of things: it is the press that looks good today laughable)!

At Eloquence, it is not obviously miss the 3CD box set devoted to rare recordings Philips, already mentioned above. The Decca box being further depleted, we note a partial edition of these recordings through Eloquence two other publications: an album devoted to French opera Overture (Herold, Boieldieu, Adam, Offenbach), and an album of dance and music ballets (Dvorak, Massenet, Meyerbeer).
