The Unit (Paperback)

Customer Review

Ninni Holmqvist first novel, The Unit is a great success because of its subject, but also in how it is treated.
Indeed, it is not always easy to write anticipation featuring fifties and posing real ethical issues without falling into parody is either in pathos. The author successfully avoids these pitfalls while hitting us quite brutally jaw. Let's face it, Unity is a punch novel I had many, very difficult to forget after reading. Besides, I read this book from the selection of the price of 2,014 readers Paperback in February and I'm not given to me.

This is the story of Dorrit, just 50 years, which becomes "superfluous". Dorrit lives in a society where, after a certain age (50 years for women, 60 for men), it loses its status as an individual if we have not had the chance to be parents or to exercise a profession useful to society. So we grabbed our goods and we were taken under guard, joining the Unit. There, an apartment waiting for us, comfortable and enjoyable if one omits the microphones and cameras. We meet other "superfluous", there is a cinema, a theater, a library, tree-lined patios, restaurants ... life could finally be soft to the Unit if they are not forced us to follow experimental procedures and if we were not obliged to give, little by little, all our organs, until the final gift.
But Dorrit will make a decisive encounter that will change the course of his life, at least for a while ...

A futuristic novel chilling, particularly well written, which highlights the important societal issues (the place of the individual in society and, especially, its usefulness) and casts after reading very difficult to dispel unease .
