Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Greatest Hits (CD)

Customer Review

This CD is a great compilation ("Greatest Hits") of one of the most creative groups of the American West Coast from the far end of the "Sixties". Why "supergroup"? Just because the three musicians (David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash), who were united in 1968, came from three remarkable collections: the Byrds (Crosby), Buffalo Springfield (Stills for) and the Hollies ( Nash) ...! The first two were American and the last English. The combination of these three artists was a great success: as we hear much in this album, Nash brought his enormous talents as a melodist (compared with those of a Paul McCartney or Brian Wilson); Crosby his compositional skills and his captivating voice; Stills talents for composition and guitar solos (electric or acoustic) often staggering. Their music realized a kind of innovative synthesis between the California country-rock (from the Byrds and Buffalo Springfield) and a British pop influences (from Hollies). One feature that strikes - when listening to their songs - lies in the rather extraordinary vocal harmonies they were capable of (a bit like the Beatles or the Beach Boys): listen to - for example - the famous "Wooden Ships" (track 12) or "Carry On" (track 16) ...! Finally, when we know that Neil Young - coming as Stills, Buffalo Springfield - often joined the group, we see how quality level is put this together ...
