I was allowed to read "Devdas" for the university. After initial skepticism, it became this book is as a timeless story, which deals with the values of love, honesty to oneself, eternal promise and the consequences of their own errors. It's hard to talk about this book without giving away too much of the plot. But whole generations in India have grown up with this book, it was filmed at least five times - the last time in 2002 with Shah Rukh Khan (a version that has really hardly anything to do with the fact book) - and that alone speaks clearly looking ahead for the story. Great landscape descriptions you will not find in the book, just as extensive explanations, but therein lies the strength of the book. By focusing on the authors plot and dialogues of each can be as much of his own experiences and thoughts while reading incorporated as he wants. Actually, it is a pity that this book has not yet been published in German, but who has a command of English and want to read a uncheesy but moving love story is well advised with this book.
