The book is truly ORIGINAL. It will probably remain in the top 10 of the best books I have read. The narration in the first person singular, is supported by Stingo, a young aspiring writer living in Brooklyn, which is soon fascinated by a couple whose torrid lovemaking he hears, but also extremely violent attacks: Nathan and Sophie. It will quickly make friends with them. Sophie will be his confidante, but also the literary material of what he writes. Almost all this work is innervated by the story of Sophie, non-Jewish Polish youth who unfortunately will know the horror of the concentration camps, because she dared secretly buy a ham to give strength to his tubercular mother. So that's the story, through the narration of Sophie, of millions of people, Jews and non-Jews, who lived through the horror of the camps. I think I never had a book in which there were as many feel it, to grasp the atrocity: Himmler, Hoess and others Nazis are present. The author manages to describe the stench of burning bodies, thousands of Polish children the Nazis voluntarily freeze to death ...
But the originality of the novel is based on the cross thematic. A story about this historical reality mingle background two love stories. Schizophrenia Nathan, sexual initiation of young writer are also developed.
A wonderful novel, a masterpiece of the twentieth, written in 1979 and that has not aged a bit!

Here are some quotes to get you-I hope-the mouth water or just help you discover this American writer, francophile, gifted with a true talent:
-On LOVE deep between two people whose caressing tenderness equaled that of the gentle words: "She [Sophie] closed his eyes and fell asleep, crossing the threshold of a distant and exotic dream, but serene, where cheerful and redemptive music mingled in a sweet confusion with scents of grass and rain. At one point, she felt against her cheek, light and delicate as a butterfly's wing, the caress of fingers Nathan who brushed a moment of delicate arabesque, a second or two at most -.. then she no longer felt anything and slept "
-On GERMANY and cruelty, a kind of collective psychosis: "This country is a cruel country Feldshon If it has become so cruel over the years is that so often he tasted defeat.." (Frustration, defeat are the real engines of hatred)
- On HORROR concentration CAMPS: "Goering was by his evil genius, the true father of those places that will remain forever in infamy symbols, Dachau, Buchenwald, Auschwitz."
-The Novel is written with great SENSUALITE, it is even the engine of this story and its sunshine. Here's how Stingo is drawn into the female attractiveness: "The sun was hot, she dripped a healthy sweat and gave off a musky scent that female on the spot, held me captive as a drone."
And for this FIGHT against absolute evil embodied in the camps by the violence contained in man, we must, to paraphrase Stingo "let love run off all that lives."
