Nikon has since 1960 many 28er released with very different optical structures, partly simple five- and six-element. The here-reviewed 2.8 / 28 (from the current production, serial no. 905xxx) appearing to be with the best of the long line. With eight lenses in eight groups, a minimum focusing distance of just 20cm and a proximity correction (CRC Close Range Correction) that really deserves its name. As a classic wide-angle design of course you have to reckon with the usual vignetting and a power drop towards the corners at f2.8. But whereas other wide angle until f8 - 11 reach their full capacity, this objective is already running at f4 - 5.6 to peak performance on and even at close range! Some kind of distortion is not noticed with this lens! Sharpness and contrast I would call well above average, even compared to, for example, the 2.8 / 24 (AF-D) or 2.8 / 20 (AIS). His only weak point might be more than that of 74 ° provides one or the other too little wide angle. The lack of autofocus I missed neither the D700 still on the F100. The super smooth running worm gear and a large optical viewfinder (the focus control has quite a large tolerance and can serve only as a guide in my opinion) is to focus on it no problem. Whoever wants to can even buy brand new, as an accessory, the lens hood HN-2 is recommended Nikon HN-2 Geli (for IX-24-70 3.5-5.6), as well as the objective of metal and "Made in Japan ". This review refers expressly only to the AiS 2.8 / 28, neither the older Ai 2.8 / 28 nor brought out later AF / D 2.8 / 28 are similar to him.
