System: 1.6GHz Mobile AMD, WinXP SP3
Software: FireFox3.5.x, OpenOffice, VLC
Kaspersky Internet Security 2010: *** (3 stars)
================================================
- Test duration: 30 days
- Surface:
Legal appealing and uncluttered user interface. Personally buttons would have preferred, as
clickable graphics and text links that lead to more information, but you get used to it.
- Antivirus software:
Duration TotalScan (about 100,000 files): approximately 1h30min + -15min
- Firewall:
Manually classify programs is very simple.
The amount of information in a firewall message is good.
- Updates:
Typically every 1-3 hours. The update runs quietly in the background.
Not nice is the fact that one learns only on the homepage of the new program versions. Hotfixes
be loaded with updates but not new releases. (Although I was advised by the support, always the
to install latest version.) Also, there are always new versions of existing problems over it to
install. Means that you have to uninstall the existing first. In my opinion, this is also the
main weakness. The program works by not mature, what's in a security tool
Causes stomach pain.
- System load:
The sytem is lightly loaded. Short mouse trailer and slightly increased program start times. Also, during a
Scans is a work still possible.
- Forum / Support:
Support will respond within 24 hours. However, the first approach only with standard answers. For me it was
an incompatibility with the virtual keyboard, but unfortunately could not be resolved or explained.
The forum is very well positioned. Many people with a whole lot of idea and short reaction times.
The link to the help pages within the program is also well done and leaves the user
the feeling not to be alone with a problem.
- Data collector behavior (felt):
In addition to the balance of the license keys I could not notice any activities. Collecting and sending another
Information you have to explicitly agree with the explanation of the nature of the data is really good.
Norton Internet Security 2010: ** (2 stars)
============================================
- Test duration: 3 days
- Surface:
Very tidy user interface, all information at a glance. Even if the color design rather to
Malware recalls.
- Antivirus software:
Duration TotalScan (about 100,000 files): 1h40min - 2h50min
Two hours and 50 minutes 100000 files is unacceptable, especially as the number of detected threats
not significantly different from those of other scanners.
The response to findings do not like it. A harmless (and also so classified) cookie was a
nebulous "action necessary" account. On the next page including a pointer was the Prog. Named on
green. And now?
Here it would take regarding more transparent information. The discoveries.
While a scan is not to think about further work. 100% CPU load paralyze the laptop completely.
- Firewall:
Brought no messages, which can be good and bad. Strangely, the list was the logged
Programs very short (much shorter than at KIS). Hope it is not incomplete ...
- Updates:
Typically all 1-3min! - Very good. The update is relatively inconspicuous.
- System load:
The system is heavily loaded. Both program start times, as well as the operation suffers noticeably.
- Forum / Support:
For support, I took no contact.
A forum I found after some searching. Again, this did not seem to be the forum "official".
Possibly Have I found also see what other but can happen as well.
- Data collector behavior (felt):
Cruel. Each Prog-Start the connection to Accout (the was not established, since only test phase)
produced. The GTC has made collecting URLs, which I agreed NOT. Nevertheless, the program was the
(I forgot the name) option enabled this messaging tools.
GData Internet Security 2010: *** (3 stars)
============================================
- Test duration: 5 days
- Surface:
Very tidy user interface. All information at a glance, almost a bit purist. The
Clarity I would equate with the Avira AntiVir.
- Antivirus software:
Duration TotalScan (about 100,000 files):
Day 1: about 2h50min, then 2min, then 1.5min
The reduction in scan time is due to the return that GDATA creates checksums for each file - not
as some believe implants itself in files. Unchanged Files then no longer need to be checked.
Day 2: about 2h50min!
Day 3: about 2h50min!
Seems as if the stored checksums but recreated and used only as part of a day.
Mag just be with me so - no idea - but is not for me akteptabel.
- Firewall:
Manually classify programs is very simple.
The amount of information in a firewall message is very good. You get the choice right always / now
Block / Allow. The four buttons clarify everything. Clicking Details lists extensive information about
the origin of the service. Grundsätlich recalls the simplicity of use of ZoneAlarm.
- Updates:
Typically every 1-3 hours. The update runs quietly in the background.
- System load:
The sytem is lightly loaded. Short mouse trailer and slightly increased program start times. However, while
the scan should not have to work on.
Very nicely solved the problem of utilization is through an option which automatically pause the scan when
the user or other programs also greatly benefit the system. During the break, the calculator works with
full power.
- Forum / Support:
Unfortunately, I could find no official forum.
Also the support is rather kundenunfreundlich since only (with costs) possible by phone. No e-mail
Address, no knowledge Date Bank.
- Data collector behavior (felt):
In addition to the balance of the license keys I could not notice any activities. Collecting and sending another
Information you have to explicitly agree with the explanation of the nature of the data is really good.
Very similar to HIS. However, you will not be bombarded with too complicated contract German, but good
comprehensible information.
Avira Premium Internet Security: **** (4 stars)
================================================
AVIRA I've only been playing in the end, since I already used the freeware version before me and the false alarms were too frequent. The updates spiked occasionally, but what could be due to the server for the free version.
- Test duration: 20 days
- Surface:
Very tidy - flat structure, similar to GIS.
- Antivirus software:
Quick! After about 25 minutes the 130,000 files were scanned. OK, the virus definition file lists nearly 1.9Mio
Signatures. KIS 2.2Mio However, the speed advantage by no means only be due.
Basically certifies "AV Comparatives" scanner very good recognition rates. The gradation on the
second highest award was due to the increased rate of false alarms.
- Firewall:
Discreetly. Same simple operation such as ZoneAlarm. Sufficient information concerning. The monitored programs.
More needs's not here, because it probably confused the normal user.
- Updates:
The default is a scheduler to 2h. However, just about every 4h are also new files available.
Compared with other scanners so something rare.
The paid version apparently uses a different server, which updates quickly and unobtrusively
can be carried out.
- System load:
No restrictions recognizable!
- Forum / Support:
Similar to Kaspersky can be found here soon a lively forum.
Also, a knowledgebase and an email contact is offered - very nice.
Unfortunately, the virus upload from quarantine does not work out. The file is sent though, is
but not processed - as whatever reason. You have to upload any viruses via its homepage.
(For this purpose best in a separate folder, which was excluded from the Guard scan, restore.
Otherwise pimped the Guard rum of course.)
By default, does the test if an uploaded file contains malicious code, 24. In my suspicions I had
after 2h the confirmation: false alarm and after 12 hours the signatures in antivirus update was added!
Exemplary!
- Data collector behavior (felt):
Could no special activities / Conditions passages locate. Because here on in EN duty to inform
there, it might actually looks as if nothing (URL, etc.) sent automatically. Fine!
CONCLUSION:
=======
1) Norton is supposed to be already become faster and is with the recognition rate between HIS and GIS. Unfortunately, on my system still far too slow and the activated data collection option, despite disagreement is a hammer.
2) Kaspersky makes a solid impression and I would have also retained, especially since I bought it just before I tested it. But since a Drüber Install often did not work (three of five attempts) and the problems with the virtual keyboard could not be resolved, I rose.
3) GDATA brings the highest detection rate, but also the longest scan times. Good ideas like the scan pause in utilization and application of the sums make it usable even on older computers. Incomprehensible to me, is the strong variation in scan times. You may also see a compatibility problem with my computer, but because of the support only for registered users and is also yet to pay, I will not find it. The lack of a forum can be completely out in the cold.
4) Avira Premium is the tool of choice for me. Fast, unobtrusive, and the second highest detection rate for GIS make the best suite on my system. The number of false alarms and the (not yet) functioning upload option from quarantine, cost a star.
