A style somewhat difficult to read at first, and could put off some who would not have the patience to reach the moment when the novel becomes truly interesting (arrival in the asylum): very little punctuation and feel half goal narrator full of detachment and irony, and half directly in the heads of the characters.
Yet finishing reading this novel, I found myself thinking intuitively that people around me were all blind, proof of the level of immersion that has managed to achieve Saramago.
