The title is probably meant ironically to hear Nothing here of the partly agonizing musical self-discovery attempts this really wily musician who produced their first record with 21 and here already submitted their 7th album. Lynne is eclectic in the best sense and brings to this album -Recorded with a few musicians and much more accompanied by their own, incredibly stylistically confident and varied Gitarrenspiel- an indigenous mix of soul, ballad, pop, country and even real, earthy Chicago Blues (Evil Man ). Mostly acoustic, accompanied with rich bass and the wonderful piano licks Bill Payne, but partly also plays with rapid Twang- and electric guitars and sings Lynne every style so intimate and authentic as on the domestic living room couch. The title "Bottons and Beaus" is a good example: introduced by loose moans, the song with acoustic guitar and Fender Rhodes sparkling grooves by a classic western swing. Lynne sings so relaxed and sexy as 20 years earlier Rickie Lee Jones in "Weasel And The White Boy" on their debut album Rickie Lee Jones. Lynne is also in good voice, her singing is without antics and vocal acrobatics as direct and warm as needed. Dramatic and economical brings a slow ballad like "I Will Stay" accompanied only by economical guitar, thin strings and a few downright cutting tones Payne's at the piano. And they can rock well fortiori, such as the uptempo number "I'm Alive" shows. In the field of female singer / songwriter I can think of few that of the pop ballad (the wonderful Closer "One With The Sun") to cover so confidently and skillfully to Rocker Everything.
An album with many advantages: A clever songwriting, the really good guitar work Lynne (played by casual strumming until the wily Lick on the electric guitar everything yourself), the natural and direct sounding recording (audiophile correctly, you can hear every string and every Fußklopfer) and then a singer who such as in the dark, "I Do not Think So") always hits at your interpretations (the right tone - Shelby Lynne gave himself and given to us as a producer and performer of a really good album.
