Customer Review

The Olympus TG-830 replaces the model of success in the Outdoor category, the TG-820.
This test will show whether a worthy successor at the start is.

The new shows off 16 instead of 12 megapixels, now has built-in GPS and can in high-speed mode to record videos and then play them back in super slow motion.

That sounds at least on the datasheet ever quite well. But what is the direct comparison in reality?

In terms of size, the two cameras give much. The TG-830 is slightly larger. Consequently, the successor is also been somewhat difficult. The reason can be found quickly in built GPS module and can be forgiven on the basis of this pleasant Zubrots again quickly.

Pleasant falls in the TG 830, the integrated gumming on the front side of the camera (right middle finger side). The feel is therefore supported and the part is just great and firmly in his hand. As with the TG 820 you should be careful when taking pictures but that is not covered with the middle finger of the left hand the lens. But after a short, this should no longer be the case.

New is also a scroll wheel, the various functions can be easily set with the, without having to agonize through the menu.

As with the predecessor useful and good useful shooting modes can be set under the MAGIC function. Here there are:

Pop Art (colors are reinforced)
Pinhole (hole-shaped shading to the subject),
FishEye (the center of the image is magnified and all round arched)
Soft Focus (soft colors and slight blurring great for portraits)
Punk (the subject in black, and the rest pink)
Glitter (glitter effect to bright points)
Watercolors (as painted with the color box)
Magic Mirror (motifs are mirrored / double)
Miniature (effect as in the plan view of the landscape of a toy train), fragments (split the image into small squares and easily separated from each other), drama (the images are obscured and seem much darker).

With these programs, many great photo ideas can be realized. Especially for people who are at war with photo editing programs, here can be easily matched easily achieve similar effects during recording.

A notable example is the Panorama function. Compared to its predecessor was clearly an improvement here. It triggers only and then turns to the camera in the desired direction, as long as the arrow is visible on the display. Everything else is taken care of the camera itself. The results are compared to other cameras Panorama functions optimally.

Another big plus is the aforementioned high-speed movie recording. Of course, the films in 1080p (Full HD) is possible. In high-speed mode is recorded at high speed and then play the movie later in Super Slow-Motion. The results are entirely convincing in every respect. From a boring jet of water from a garden hose an experience is frolicking kids are fun to balls and sports photography ensure open mouths. Here the imagination knows no boundaries.

Even otherwise, the normal full HD movie function impress with beautiful colors and a crisp sharpness. Through the anti-blur succeed flawless film shooting in a trembling hand. In strong wind noise is a selectable filters available.

The true 3D Recording (images only) the previous camera was deleted. Here, everyone has to decide for themselves what is important to him. It makes sense and impressive in my eyes is the new high-speed operation of the TG-830th

At the front of the camera next to the LED flash a lamp is integrated into the housing. This lamp succeed impressive macro shots (close-up). However, this light should be activated in the menu.

The actual core of a Digi-Cam of image quality. Here could already convince the TG-820. So also the successor. If you consider that recordings can be displayed with the small, firmly integrated in the housing lens, this is more than impressive. Even in low light still succeed consistently decent pictures. One difference between the images is not given to me visually. From a laboratory test on the internet, I could see that both cameras have just under 10 megapixel effective resolution. Thus, the megapixel numbers are probably rather delusion.

It can be selected between the following resolutions (image sizes):

16 megapixel, 8 megapixel, 3 megapixel, VGA

As aspect ratio can be chosen:

4: 3, 16: 9, 3: 2, 1: 1

The lens is well protected behind a small glass plate.

Unfortunately, it was decided at Olympus to emphasize the automatic lens cover. In the TG-820 that the lens is protected by an automatically closing aluminum cover when the camera.

For me have gained from underwater shots later drops of water under the cover at the TG-820. Perhaps this is the reason for the cancellation. Either way, the lens is protected enough and set back into the housing integrated. The better feeling I had but with the solution of the TG-820th

What was to improve and has now actually changed is the placement of the connector for the charger plug. The battery is charged as the predecessor in the camera body. In the TG-820 was the only inconvenient to load when battery compartment is open. In the successor to a compartment at the bottom of the camera is now specially integrated. Here the charger cable / USB / HDMI port finds its. The battery compartment must not be open at all times, which is probably a positive effect in the long run on the sealing rubbers.

For underwater shots I could not detect any differences in picture quality. The maximum water depth is 10 meters. Of course, may also be filmed in the water. So a slip drive, lying on his stomach, the swimming pool is later in the domestic TV / PC a real pleasure and makes for a lot of laughs! Photographs succeed eg in the swimming pool with relatively clear water very well. In turbid waters focusing falls naturally heavier.

Up to a height of 2.1 meters, the camera is shockproof. So it should anything happen when times accidentally slips out of your hand.

When the display of the red pencil in comparison to its predecessor was recognized. But it is only to detect a slight decrease in picture sharpness with the naked eye.

The enclosed printed manual helps as good as nothing. Here one has to resort to the manual on the included CD-Rom. There should be more people who do not have a PC at home or prefer to leaf through a book to stare at the monitor instead. Unfortunately, out in the cold.

The fan is shipped with a USB charger with tuck away cable, wrist strap, a battery and a software CD. As a program is only the Olympus Viewer 3 included. Etc. A small image editing program missing.

This camera knows not only visually pleasing, the inner values are convincing. The video and film recordings are consistently all very neat and sometimes even impressive for the size of the lens. An equipment was not saved and still there are the waterproof and dustproof and shock resistant. The camera can thus actually everything and not this bad!

For me there is therefore a full purchase recommendation for a well thought out and perfectly implemented All-In-One Outdoor Digi-Cam!

Anyone who has called the TG-820 its own, does not need to re-engage in the pocket. For this the changes are too low.
